Wednesday was the big day for jests and practical jokers alike – April Fools’ Day is an international holiday celebrated by millions across the globe. The day is characterized by pranks and jests, and if celebrated right can bring smiles and laughter to everyone’s face. April Fool’s Day is a fun holiday to have around, and it should be around for many decades to come.

In 2012, The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness declared that animals are as aware of their immediate surroundings as humans are. The declaration, signed at a conference in the presence of Stephen Hawking, states that animals can feel emotions just as strongly as humans can. This brings the ethics of animal testing back into question.

Terrorism is a universal problem that has been on the news for a long time. There have been conferences held and protests lead against this kind of violence, but nothing has worked effectively enough to eradicate it completely. This, in summary, is because terrorism is not necessarily linked to psychopathology, religion or lack of education, but rather a strong sense of injustice. Terrorism will be an incredibly difficult problem to fix.

Unless you haven’t been on the Internet in the past few days, I’m sure you’ve seen “the dress that made the Internet explode.” There is a dress that looks distinctly different to different people. Some say it’s blue and black, some say it’s white and gold. Although which color the dress truly is does not affect us in any way, the principals behind this argument apply directly to our lives.

Brian Williams, a news anchor for NBC, has recently been suspended as a lead anchor for six months. He had misspoken on Jan. 30 about being in a helicopter that had been hit by a rocket while he was covering the Iraqi war back in the year 2003. While it is directly disrespectful to embellish this particular type of story -- and a suspension was warranted for it -- given what psychology tells us about storytelling, I don’t believe any further disciplinary action is required.

Over the past few years Pope Francis has been in the news several times. Although this is to be expected – he is the Catholic Pope after all – I believe his messages of humility and peace are worthy of attention.

Because psychology is one of my majors, I often find myself discussing whether or not psychology should be considered a science. This topic will come up between friends, between classmates and especially in lectures themselves.

As you’re probably aware, many family-orientated holidays have just passed. During the holidays, at least here in the U.S., there is an overwhelming emphasis on families during Thanksgiving and Christmas, but how exactly is a family defined? What is the difference between a friendship and a family?

I joined staff here at the Eastern Echo during my first week of college back in 2012. Being involved in the campus newspaper, especially here at Eastern, has been extremely beneficial to me as a writer, student and person.

Art teachers and art students at Creekside Middle School in Zeeland, Mich., are remodeling 100 end tables in every color, shape and size. Some of these designs include mosaics of Van Gogh’s paintings, Captain America memorabilia and breast cancer ribbons. Their goal is to auction off these tables to raise $10,000 for the homeless, reports MLive.

The season of unique scarf, hat, and glove fashions is upon us. Winter-wear is now sold across the Midwest in all colors, patterns and styles. Yet one particular article of clothing has been severely lacking in efficiency. Most of the women’s winter boots have not been made for Michigan’s cold and harsh winters.

As I am sure you know, Election Day has just passed. I have to admit I am very glad. Politics are almost impossible to get away from, as are conversations about them. The weeks leading up to Election Day is a time where opinions become more important than people. Relationships between those informed and involved in politics become strained.

Imagine yourself in a foreign city of an English-speaking country. Can you think of some differences you might notice between American culture and the city you have found yourself in? Does the air smell the same? Do the people act the same? Does the city look anything like you are used to? These are all questions I asked myself before I left for Derby, England for the 2013-2014 academic school year. I participated in a study abroad program through Eastern Michigan University and studied at the University of Derby for nine months.

Bullying is a problem our society has faced for a long time. Even after so many years of advocacy on this issue, our schools still don’t know how to handle bullying as well as they should.
