Coming back to school isn’t everyone’s favorite task, but with school comes the best season of the year: Fall. It’s full of fashion, fresh starts, and apple cider. Okay, so that last part had nothing to do with fashion, but still, who doesn’t love fall? With fall comes new fashion trends, so here are the seasons six must haves:
With tax season in full swing, the Eastern Michigan University College of Business and Beta Alpha Psi accounting club are helping students and members of the local community get more bang for their buck this year by offering free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
After 5 years in the making, Ann Arbor native Harlin Newcomb, 35, will be celebrating the release of his freshman studio album, “Ground Zero,” Jan. 25 at The Blind Pig, located at 208 S. First St. in downtown Ann Arbor. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and cover is $7 for 21 and up and $10 for 18-20. Newcomb and local rappers Nickie P., Bedroxx and Tru Klassick will be performing, along with DJ Chill Will from Tampa, Fla.
It was a cold and wet Saturday morning as local residents and students went out to the Ypsilanti Freighthouse plaza for the Depot Town Farmers’ Market. Vendors were jumping up and down to stay warm and children dressed up in Halloween costumes were pulled in bright red wagons. The smell of hot apple cider and popcorn was in the air. This marks the second to last of the weekends that the market is outside before it moves to the winter location in the Adams STEM Academy on Oak Street.
“Jackass: Bad Grandpa,” the fourth film from the franchise, will be filled with all of the crass hidden camera debauchery that we’ve come to know and love, with a bit more direction than the previous “Jackass” films.
Four friends came together, drank beer and made good music. That band, Ypsilanti-based Truman, released its second album, “Ever Changing,” in September, and are giving it away for free on truman3.bandcamp.com
Here’s the thing about Chelsea Fagan’s “I’m Only Here for the WiFi:” It is downright, oftentimes, laugh-out-loud funny. Fagan just has a way of turning a phrase – well, more like concocting a phrase-like cocktail out of overwhelming sarcasm, addictive wit and unavoidable truth. Only then does she inject the narcotic into your veins and let it marinate. I’m sorry, did I say marinate? I meant cause a ruckus.
When did Eminem just lose it? Music critics mostly said that 2004’s “Encore,” which I personally loved, had a significant drop in quality that has continued well into his comeback. Some claim that he never lost it at all, and others say he never even had it.
Even though the Echo stops running from the end of June until the end of summer, I’ve been hard at work, listening to music, studying other reviews and writing. Part of the pleasure of music to me is writing about it. So I figured, rather than post online material throughout the summer, I could just put my opinions on all the music I’ve been listening to this summer into a couple very long articles. Part two will come at the beginning of the school year.
Virginia-based rockers Corsair initially seemed like the type of group whose every idea represented something I dislike. They are typically described as heavy metal, their name is boring (although, to be fair, so are the names of the majority of bands I like), the cover of their self-titled album appears to be a failed attempt at epic imagery (which, in heavy metal, is often used to compensate for a lack of imagery and epic qualities in the songs), and they open the album with an instrumental called “Agathyrsi” that nears six minutes in length. Everything was in order for me to hate this band.
To say the way human beings interact has changed immensely in the past 10 years would be an understatement. That fact is clearly on display in the new application available on Facebook called Bang With Friends.
It appeared as if the Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center was welcoming an influx of new female Muslim students Tuesday night, each with their own brightly colored headscarf, or hijab.
If you had the opportunity to nerd out for something you love, would you? Think of the way Sheldon Cooper of “The Big Bang Theory” nerds out for his love of Spock and superhero icons (minus the slew of restraining orders and reassuring he’s not insane, which his mother had him tested for).
A victory at last! After seven weeks of the regular season, the Eastern Michigan University football team defeated the Army Black Knights 48-38 for their first win of the 2012 campaign.
Many musical artists broke into the industry last year. Adele became the biggest artist on the radio, while Frank Ocean’s “Nostalgia, Ultra” mix tape made him the biggest hit with critics. Foster the People had a huge hit with a song about shooting hipsters, Cee-Lo Green had a huge song with a lame censored version of his brilliant angry love song (it’s not really called “Forget You”) and tUnE-yArDs went from being a modest critical success to topping the Pazz & Jop critics poll.
Some Eastern Michigan University Eagles wore their green and white proudly during the days leading up to Saturday’s Homecoming football game against Kent State at Rynearson Stadium.
Staying simultaneously comfortable and fashionable can be a challenge. One of the most trying times (style-wise) for any young adult is back to school. Defining your personal style, enjoying the time it takes to get dressed and impressing your peers consumes your thoughts until midterms come along.
On Friday night, people gathered to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers live in concert at Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings. They rocked out, jammed-out and head-banged the whole night. The band received a standing ovation before the show and performed a two song encore. But, despite their performance, it was Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom’s appearance that received the biggest standing ovation that night.
“The thing I like most about softball is that it is a team sport that allows individuals to come together to play for a common goal,” outfielder McKenna Russ said. “The adrenaline rush that I get running onto that field is a feeling that I will always remember.”
