COB, Beta Alpha Psi accounting club offer free tax prep

With tax season in full swing, the Eastern Michigan University College of Business and Beta Alpha Psi accounting club are helping students and members of the local community get more bang for their buck this year by offering free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

This free service – offered by students certified with the Internal Revenue Service – is free to anyone in the EMU or local community with a demonstrated annual income of $52,000 or less, according to a COB press release.

“This is a great opportunity for both students and the community,” program coordinator Umar Rabbimov said in the press release. “For students, it is a great way to give back to society through their knowledge of tax preparation and for the community it provides relief.”

The free tax preparation will be available in rooms 211 and 215 of the COB on March 22, April 12 and April 15 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and in room G11 of Halle Library on March 28 and April 4 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Appointments cannot be made in advance, and are first-come, first-served.

Those interested in taking advantage of free tax preparation at EMU must bring the following items:

- Proof of identification (Picture ID with date of birth) – One of the following items for each claimed dependent: Social Security Card, Social Security number verification letter from the Social Security administration or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number assignment letter – All of the following applicable items: wage and earning statements (W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-misc), school expenses, interest and dividend statements, a copy of last year’s federal and state returns, proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit and daycare expenses with provider’s Social Security number or business employer identification number
