The Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team’s roller coaster 2024-25 campaign continued on Tuesday evening. After winning three straight in conference play and firmly entrenching themselves as MAC tournament contenders, the Eagles have now lost their third straight, falling 70-49 at home to Kent State.Eastern Michigan started the game off ice cold, missing their opening seven shots and trailing the Golden Flashes 15-2 just over six minutes into the contest. While the Eagles were able to gradually dig their way out of the hole and eventually cut Kent State’s lead down to three in the second half, their shooting woes persisted, and the Golden Flashes went on a 25-8 run down the stretch to pull away and bury the home team. “I don’t think it’s rocket science—you have opportunities to make a shot, make a layup, make a free throw, make a pass—you have to execute,” Eagles head coach Stan Heath said when asked about his team’s offensive woes as of late. This game marked the second straight outing in which Eastern Michigan failed to score over 55 points, a stark contrast from their previous three contests, in which they had scored 80 or more points. The Eagles shot 28.3% (17/60) from the floor as a team on the night, one of their worst shooting performances. They also shot 26.3% (6/23) from three-point range. Three players from the squad managed to reach double figures: Christian Henry (Chicago, Illinois/The Skill Factory/Panola College) for the 10th consecutive game, Jalen Terry (Flint, Michigan/Beecher/Oregon/DePaul), and Yusuf Jihad (Farmington Hills, Michigan/North Farmington/Oakland) all led the team with 10 points apiece. Next week, Eastern Michigan hopes to snap their losing skid with their final non-conference home matchup of the season: a date with Sun Belt foe Old Dominion on Saturday at 2 p.m. Viewers can stream the game live on ESPN+.

While the temperatures outside were historically frigid, the Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team was red hot from the floor to warm up the George Gervin GameAbove Center on Tuesday night, knocking off the preseason MAC favorite Ohio Bobcats en route to a 94-87 victory. The Eagles shot a season-best 60.3% from the floor, and four players scored 15 points or more to add to their offensive eruption. At one point early in the second half, they bolted out to a 21-point lead. However, Ohio didn’t go down without a fight, storming back on a 13-2 run down the stretch to cut Eastern Michigan’s lead down to five in the closing stages. Some clutch free throw shooting from the Eagles allowed the home team to escape with their second straight conference victory. “I think we played about 30 minutes in this game, probably left about 10 on the table,” head coach Stan Heath said regarding his team’s performance in the win. “It’s hard in this league. You go up by 20, you go up by 17, you can’t relax - and that’s one thing I thought we did in the second half,” he added.Four different players for Eastern Michigan all contributed 15 points or more to the team’s winning effort: Da'Sean Nelson (Toledo, Ohio/Robert S. Rogers/Kilgore College/DePaul) lead the way with 21 points, Christian Henry (Chicago, Illinois/The Skill Factory/Panola College) contributed 18, Jalen Terry (Flint, Michigan/Beecher/Oregon/DePaul) added 17, and Arne Osojnik (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Dream City Christian) scored 16, the second straight game he has done so. It was a special night for Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius), regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard. The true junior was honored during the pregame festivities for scoring her 1,000th career point against Ball State last week and continued her incredible run of form by dropping 16 points and 11 rebounds - her ninth double-double of the campaign - while also leading the team in assists with a career-high of five. Despite this, while the Eagles only trailed conference favorites Buffalo by eight at the half, the Bulls went on a 25-8 third-quarter run to pull away down the stretch, securing a 22-point victory on the road to bolster their record to 14-2 (3-2 MAC) while the Eagles fell to 1-14 (0-5 MAC). “A lot of [unforced errors],” head coach Sahar Nusseibeh described as the main reason why Buffalo was able to pull away from Eastern Michigan to start the second half. “I think it’s really hard to generate momentum when you’re turning the ball over in those types of ways; and then defensively, we just let them go,” she added. While Eleko stole the show again as the only Eagles player to score double figures, Mackenzie Amalia (Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania/Blackhawk/Canisius) added nine points thanks to two late three-pointers. In contrast, Brooklyn Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius) and Kyndal Lewis (Belton, Missouri/Belton) added eight points. Eastern Michigan as a team shot 35.2% from the floor (19/54) and 25% from behind the arc (9/36), paling in comparison to the 47.6% (30/63) that Buffalo put up on the court despite shooting only 35.3% (6/17) from downtown. The Eagles will return to action on the road this Saturday afternoon, facing off against Central Michigan on Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. Viewers can catch the game broadcast live on ESPN+.
