“Nothing but Blackened Teeth,” released on Oct.19, and is Cassandra Khaw’s newest horror novella and classic ghost story based on Japanese folklore. It follows five protagonists as they navigate a Heian house that is rumored to be haunted.
Filmmaking is truly an art form. Great filmmaking can take you into the world of the film and make you want more. When the shots are so skillfully done, it makes the audience want to be transported into that world. Film-making and world-building are two massive film foundations. Without one of the two, the film would be less stable. Films should make us imagine ourselves in that world that is shown on screen, and in my opinion, that is great filmmaking.
After about a year and a half, You has finally returned to Netflix on Oct.15 for the third season. When I first saw that it came back, I was excited, but skeptical. After the trailers, as well as how the last season ended, I was curious to see how the new season would play out.
The music world has a lot to thank from the popular social media app TikTok. One of the many talented artists to rise from the app is UK artist Pink Pantheress. Influenced by the likes of Aj Tracey, Paramore, and sounds of Y2K, Pink Pantheress has mixed them all into a sonically pleasing album. Hailing from Bath, England, she introduced a sound that is not typical to most of her American listeners.
It is truly hard to believe that we are over 40 years into the Halloween franchise. The original Halloween came out in 1978! Michael Myers has easily positioned himself as one of the greatest horror characters in movie history, along with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. Over 40 years of memories and classic slasher moments have littered this franchise. We got the revival of the series in 2018, which to my surprise was very well done. Jamie Lee Curtis returned with a bang and after at that time breathed new life into the Halloween franchise. Salute to Jamie Lee for giving this franchise everything she has.
The year 2018 was when the world was truly first introduced to the artist known as Don Tolliver after being featured on Travis Scott’s hit album “Astroworld.” Since Astroworld, he hasn’t lost his steam, releasing hit singles like “No Idea,” or being featured along well known artists like Kanye West or Justin Bieber. Now the Houston, Texas native is back with his second full length studio album “Life of a DON.”
Whether you’re looking for a scary thriller or a funny scare, these are my recommendations for must-see movies this Halloween season. I’ll rate these movies on a scare scale out of 10, so you can know if the movie will be the right fit for you.
“Cloud Cuckoo Land,” released Sept. 28, is Anthony Doerr’s latest novel. A literary epic spanning nearly six centuries that follows the lives of five characters who are connected by their love for a single book: “Cloud Cuckoo Land.”
Hearing the lyrics “don’t try to chase me, he’ll do so much better” usually would not make someone feel relaxed and light on their feet. Yet this new and talented artist from Montana proves otherwise. Unusual Demont, whose real name is Demontcea Howard, has just released his EP titled “Hues” which is just as colorful and pleasing to the ears as it sounds.
What is the point of making sequels? Is it always necessary? Well folks, let your trusted Eastern Echo movie critic try to shed some light. Sequels should be made to not only retell parts of the original story, but they should also be used in a way to tell a new story with new character arcs, themes, and adventures. Sequels are needed for certain films, and the originals are crafted in a way to lead the audience to be excited about a sequel.
Suicide and mental health are growing social topics. They are important topics that are especially relevant to our youth these days. 16.5% of teens have a diagnosed mental health condition and are becoming more prone to suicide, which is now the third leading cause of death among teens. This film should be a subtle reminder to watch out for the signs and address them, as well as being there for the people you love the most.

There are so many people and nations that fall under the title of Latin, which translates into a ton of talent and culture across the world. Latinx artists have always been shaping music in more ways than one. Even in the U.S., there have been plenty of influential and growing artists who also represent another country in their music. Whether that be Selena, Kali Uchis, J Balvin, Rosalia, Bad Bunny and so many more. Fans of music have so much to owe to Latinx musicians for their impact on the American music scene. Here are a few artists who hail or descended from Spanish speaking countries.
What is the first thing you think of when you think of Spiderman? Unless you are J. Jonah Jameson, you probably think of an awkward teen who swings between skyscrapers with web-shooters and says funny jokes. Whether you are a die-hard comic fan, or someone who just watches the movies, there is an undeniable aura of innocence that comes from the famous web-head. To think his story started with a murder would be surprising to those unfamiliar with the character. In almost every Spiderman story, his call to action comes from the death of his Uncle Ben, who raised Peter Parker after his parents were no longer around. He is seen in almost every Spiderman movie, but that does not mean they all use him well.
The Western movie genre has given us some of the greatest stories in Hollywood. This genre has given us excellent storytelling, memorable villains and heroes, and amazing settings and scenery. Clint Eastwood has been the star of many of these beloved Westerns. "Unforgiven," "Good, Bad, and The Ugly," and "A Fistful of Dollars," just to name a few. Eastwood's legacy in this genre will forever be celebrated and remembered. My father had me watch these films at an early age, so the level of respect and love for Eastwood and his Westerns will always be close to my heart.
Before I start I will say I am no fan of Drake as a person, but have always enjoyed his music. When this album was released I was not expecting anything revolutionary or mind blowing due to the nature of Drake’s previous releases. I was not expecting Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly,” or Kanye West’s “Yeezus” or even another version of Drake’s “More Life” but I still was disappointed. I am not saying this is a horrible album, but it is just lame even for Drake. “CLB” comes off as Drake's most unimaginative and mediocre album to date. As a side note, I will not be mentioning Kanye West’s “Donda” since this is about “CLB” even though it has become common knowledge that these albums are competing against one another.
Hip-Hop stars Kanye West and Drake both released their long awaited albums around the same time a few weeks ago. I won't go in depth on either of them, but I feel like they are both mediocre in comparison to what most people wanted. I feel that the other two artists were too worried about each other and sales and music streams to accomplish anything special. Instead, I have listed a few albums that I have enjoyed more than "Donda" or "Certified Lover Boy" that should have been given the same spotlight as the former.
When it comes to Marvel movies, it seems there is a clear formula for crafting the beloved superhero films that they create. In most of these films, the story is well balanced and well-paced and features a strong cast. There are times I wish that Marvel would drift away from this basic formula as it can be repetitive but I guess the old saying is “if it ain't broke don't fix it.”
Seemingly out of nowhere, the artist, SZA tweeted “dumping random thoughts” with a Soundcloud link attached on Aug. 22. This link lead to a Soundcloud account that only had three singles posted. This was honestly a blindside for me as a fan, since there was no buzz of her releasing music anytime soon. Besides a few recent features as of late, she has not officially released music since December of 2020, when she gave us the single “Good Days”. Her last studio album was a long four years ago when she came out with her debut album "CTRL". This dump of three songs isn’t official since it was released under a fake name, but could signal more music from SZA soon.
