Since this is my last column, I have thought a lot about what to write. I wanted to do something special. Something that was joyous, that celebrated the end of the year and the end of my college career. I was thinking about layer cakes, or something that requires a blowtorch. What changed my mind was the quiet arrival of the first asparagus.

Todd Terje: “It’s Album Time” (Olsen Records) Todd Terje has finally released his debut album a decade after releasing his first EP in 2004. The fun, cheesy album uses a handful of songs Terje previously released, bringing back old favorites, but the album is still uniquely new. Whether it’s a warm view of the beach or a let’s-get-freaky disco club, each track brings a different mood. A variety of strangely quirky yet fitting effects are used throughout the album, adding a funky vibe into the mix.

Easter eggs are typically all made in the same manner – hard boil some eggs, mix some coloring agent (tablet, food coloring, plant) and vinegar, let egg sit and absorb color. In reality, there’s many ways to cover a white shell, and one of those ways is decoupage.

When someone says “dyeing Easter eggs,” I believe one naturally thinks of either boxed Paas kits with those entertaining fizzy pellets or, if you were from a more frugal household, McCormick food coloring with which you could play mad scientist and mix colors. Certainly, before searching for ideas for this Easter Craft Corner, I never thought of doing anything differently.

By my standards, lemon bars are a rare cookie, a two-layered combination of shortbread and custard-like lemon toping. They seem to appear mostly at potlucks or church picnics. For all that they seem to be a favorite of the pre-baby boomer crowd. They’re incredibly easy. I discovered this when I made them myself.

Bonnie has had a flock of hens for several years, and typically has several dozen beautiful, fresh eggs in her refrigerator as a result.

Following the 2012 takeover of Northern Mali by Islamic fundamentalist groups – in which the attempts of implementing sharia resulted in popular music being banned – and the January 2013 French intervention, 2013 ended up being perhaps the finest year for Malian music. Now, with two fine albums released this year, one of which is a fantastic celebration of Malian music as a whole, 2014 is looking to be a great year for it as well.

As a lover and collector of yarn, I often find myself searching for online stores where I can at least daydream about the gorgeous colors and textures of luxury yarn even if I can’t cough up $30 for a single skein. One of my favorite online haunts is Purl Soho (purlsoho.com), a New York City-based yarn and quilting shop that focuses on premium fibers (cashmere, silk, alpaca) and hard-to-find fabrics, such as Liberty of London prints.
