It’s been above freezing for a couple days, but it’s still January in Michigan. Winter is the time of year to trot out hot, filling dishes – the kind of dish that does more than fill your tummy. Winter is the time for convivial foods that leave you with a sense of comfort and happiness. For me, the perfect food for that is soup. What’s been on my stove these past couple days is a wonderfully thick rice and lentil soup.

A day in the life of a college student can be many things including busy and broke. Still, one can always eat like a champion. Two recipes that are fairly easy to make, with ingredients that aren’t too expensive to buy, are personal pizzas and corn chip chili casserole.

The simple idea that eating a balanced diet as part of daily care will help people stay healthy dates back generations to the old saying, “An apple a day will keep the doctor away.”

For a huge part of 2013, HAIM’s “The Wire” was my favorite song of the year. Then, in December, I discovered a gem from earlier in the year that took its spot. Unlike last year, where “Call Me Maybe” was my favorite song throughout the entire year, this year surprised me at the last minute. So, here are my top 10 songs of the year.

The world of health and beauty products is always going through phases and trends. Currently, there is a movement to be more conscious of ingredients and processes that go into making these products. Companies and brands that are all natural and cruelty-free are becoming more well-known and popular. Lush Cosmetics, with a location in the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, is one of those companies.

The Eastern Michigan University Student Center was filled with laughter on Jan. 9 as students grabbed some free food and a night of entertainment. Campus Life presented the Laugh Lounge, “a haven for stand-up comedy fans.” Local stand-up comedians in the Ypsilanti and surrounding areas come together to bring laughs.

There’s been a huge craft movement in the past 10 years. Generations that wouldn’t be caught dead with a knitting needle have children cranking out scarves with a kit available at Toys R Us.

I used to have all sorts of trouble when I tried to bake a cake. It would sound so easy – go to the grocery store, buy whichever flavor of cake mix sounded appealing, mix in two eggs, stir in some oil and bake. Yet every time I attempted to make cake from a mix, I managed to screw it up in inexplicable ways, the cake sank or the cupcakes refused to separate from their wrappers.

After all of this unpredictable Michigan weather we have been having, it can be hard to decide what exactly to wear in the morning. One thing that everyone needs to be wearing around campus right now is boots.

New Year’s resolutions come in all shapes and sizes. Millions make them each year and many will break them before the year is done. Using technology to achieve New Year’s resolutions is an excellent way to keep on track and stay focused. While many apps exist to help with everything from staying organized to losing weight, the following seven are the best of the best currently on the market for 2014.

Eleven years after “Lilo and Stitch,” Disney gives us another movie about sisters, where the central focus plays upon the relationship between the two girls, rather than remarking on the cliché love story nearly every Disney princess movie adheres to.

Mother Nature and Jack Frost released their vengeance across the state of Michigan with frigid temperatures below zero, treacherous road conditions and high winds. But through the torture of surviving this winter wonderland, Eastern Michigan University students were gifted with two back-to-back snow days from Jan. 6-7.

As we stride away from 2013 shamefully full of the new Taco Bell grillers, Starbucks fraps blissfully topped with whipped cream and used-up meal plans, it is advised we make a few changes for 2014.

If you watch “The Best Man Holiday,” be prepared to laugh and shed some tears. The movie, directed by Malcolm D. Lee, picks up nearly 15 years later after the original “Best Man” film in 1999.

Opportunities for improvement are abundant on the path of higher education and with fall semester behind them, students gear up for winter 2014. For some, the previous semester brought around a slew of learning experiences both good and bad, but many of life’s lessons are learned through trial and error. In order to start off on the right foot, students should enter the right frame of mind for success by developing some new habits practical for a lifetime of success.

2013 was an interesting year for movies, especially within the past couple of months when all of the films deemed Oscar-worthy were released. I’ve heard enough about “Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave” – we all know they’re both going to clean up at the Academy Awards. So here are my top films of 2013.
