Julea Ward’s case trial next month

The case of a former Eastern Michigan University student being dismissed from the university’s counseling program for refusing to counsel a gay client is set to go to trial next month. Julea Ward was enrolled in a counseling program at EMU where students counsel five to eight clients a semester from the general public.

Drive-by shooting injures one person

One person was hospitalized in a drive-by shooting Saturday near the intersection of Ballard and Cross streets in Ypsilanti, according to a release from police.

Man accused of swindling $700 thousand

Fraud suspect arraigned Robert George appeared for arraignment on Thursday for a 25-count felony warrant for swindling $700,000 out of Ypsilanti Township residents alone. Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Detective Kevin Parviz alleges George was selling condominiums in the Crystal Ponds Condominiums development, but pocketing deposits, construction payments and other fees for personal use. The investigation began in 2005 and the charges include obtaining money under false pretenses in excess of $20,000, larceny by conversion and fraudulent use of building contract funds. Parviz named 30 people who have lost their life savings because of the scheme. George has sought the protection of the U.S.



Cafe Luwak will stay open for another year while owner Jim Karnopp looks for a business partner to run the cafe.

Ypsi DDA Design Committee accepts bids for signal tower

Last Monday, the Ypsilanti Downtown Development Authority’s Design Committee looked at nine bids from four sign contractors for the signal tower at the corner of Cross and River streets in Depot Town. A motion from DDA member Sandee French to accept a design from Huron Signs was seconded by Scotty James, DDA board member and design committee vice-chair.

Ypsilanti dispatch discusses moving

Ypsilanti City Council will likely be discussing the merits of contracting dispatch for police and fire departments through the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. After a presentation during last Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, City Manager Ed Koryzno said the group would likely be taking the matter up for discussion during its meeting later this month. He said the matter can be decided by resolution of Council, which would not require publication or a public hearing. During his presentation to City Council, Lieutenant Paul DeRidder – acting chief for the Ypsilanti Police Department, said the city could realize more than $89,000 in cost savings if the plan is approved.
