Katie's Craft Corner: DIY blogs

·

The resources available to crafters on the internet are unlimited. With so many options, how do you know where to look? Here, I’ve listed all the sites I’ve found over the years that will surely inspire you to pick up a new project. All sites are youthful and fun, with an emphasis on style and personalization.

Matt on Music: Wussy's 'Bernice Huff and son, Bill sings Popular Favorites'

·

I make no secret about Wussy being my favorite band, possibly of all time and definitely right now. Every new release increases my admiration of them, even if it’s something as simple as an acoustic re-recording of their first album or a cover of Dusty Springfield’s “Breakfast in Bed.” They’re just fantastic, and have an almost inhuman ability to make magic happen during every performance.

The Blind Pig will host dual-release party

·

The Blind Pig, located at 208 S. First St. in downtown Ann Arbor, is hosting a dual CD release party Saturday for two southeast Michigan emcees, who will be performing their new albums in their entirety. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and cover is $7 for ages 21 and up and $10 for ages 18-20.

Cold and flu remedies for winter semester

·

It feels like little green fat men are living in your nose, chest and throat. They make it so you’re tired, you hurt all over, you sneeze, and cough every 30 seconds and generally feel miserable. Yes, the germs and viruses attacking your body right now may be that of the common cold or the flu.

Fashion not just clothing but persona, ideal image

·

The definition of fashion in the dictionary is “a popular trend especially in styles of dress, ornament or behavior.” This definition does not truly capture what fashion is about. For years, fashion has been used to identify time periods, groups of people and socioeconomic changes and to alter the way people think of themselves. These reasons alone should be enough to make people take the fashion industry seriously. The question still remains, is fashion really important?

Grindhouse Review: 'Basket Case'

·

“Basket Case” (1982) Directed By Frank Henenlotter Starring Kevin Van Hentenryck, Terri Susan Smith, Beverly Bonner, Robert Vogel, Diana Browne, Lloyd Pace, Bill Freeman, Joe Clarke and Ruth Neuman. “What’s in the basket? Open it if you dare.” Writer/director Frank Henenlotter introduced us to a unique form of terror with the Bradley Brothers in the 1982 cult fan favorite “Basket Case.”

Matt on Music: Pere Ubu's 'Lady from Shanghai'

·

Listening to “Lady from Shanghai,” the new album from Pere Ubu, one might come to the conclusion that band leader David Thomas doesn’t read a lot of Pitchfork. We should all be this lucky, but if you’re going to try to record weird music, it might be helpful to know what is considered the norm these days.

·

This past week The Eastern Echo got a chance to get an early peek at the North American International Auto Show, which takes place every year at the Cobo Center in Detroit.

EMU alum shares transgender journey

·

“She stands in the quiet darkness, this troubled woman bowed by weariness and pain like an autumn flower in the frozen rain, like a wind-blown autumn flower that never lifts its head again.” -Langston Hughes, “Troubled Woman.”

Rap doesn’t fit with MLK’s ideals

·

What are the implications of the materialistic lyrics found in today’s hottest hip-hop hits? Eastern Michigan University student Ivory Harris Jr., one of the minds behind “Knowledge, Power, Respect: Hip-Hop Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” was eager to find out. After conducting a study in November 2011, Harris discovered that 48 out of 50 songs on the Billboard hip-hop and rhythm and blues charts glorified alcohol or substance abuse, crime and violence and other negative themes.

Open letter to the Eastern Michigan University community from the family of Julia Niswender:

Thank you for being a part of her life, -The family of Julia Niswender

Winterfest activities continue

Grindhouse Review: 'Dark Star'

·

Clever and ambitious yet excruciatingly silly (unless you’re a fan of the campy sci-fi genre), filmmakers John Carpenter and future “Alien” creator Dan O’ Bannon teamed up for their first joint venture in storytelling with their 1974 cult classic, “Dark Star.”

Matt on Music: Yo La Tengo's 'Fade'

·

“Sometimes the bad guys come out on top/Sometimes the good guys lose” is the line that opens “Fade,” the new album from Hoboken-based indie-rockers Yo La Tengo. The line that ends the same song, “Ohm,” is “It’s been fun.”

EMU film appreciation series to focus on history of movies

·

When it comes to film, we all know if it’s released, it’s likely to be seen. All around the world millions of people go and watch movies everyday, whether it be in their homes or in the theater. Something people don’t always account for is how film itself has progressed over the years.
