The four phases of studying for final exams

·

College students are no strangers to the most dreaded week of the semester – finals week. Freshman year you are likely to make a lot of mistakes regarding studying for exams, such as preparing too late or not preparing at all.

Matt on Music: Sufjan Stevens and Girl Talk

Serengeti, Sufjan Stevens and Son Lux first collaborated on the fine 2012 EP “Beak & Claw,” credited as s / s / s. They’ve since changed their name to Sisyphus and recently released their first LP. Gregg Gillis is a mashup artist who goes by the name Girl Talk. He has released several terrific albums, most recently 2010’s “All Day.” His latest release is a collaboration with rapper Freeway, where he steps back from the role of mashup creator and into the role of producer.

Todd Terje's 'It's Album Time' distinctly disco, but still modern

·

Terje, with the help of Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music fame, also covers a Robert Palmer song, the surprisingly sad “Johnny and Mary.” It tones down the album almost precisely in the middle, a little too early to suck the fun right out of it. However, with more enthusiasm than anywhere else in the album, Terje infuses as much vivacity as he can into the final track, “Inspector Norse.” This song leaves you with excitement but without quite forgetting the abrupt change in the mood halfway through listening.

Patton Oswalt's newest stand-up album a bit of a step down

·

Comedian Patton Oswalt released his first two stand-up albums, “222” and “Feelin’ Kinda Patton,” to little exposure. However, released on popular indie label Sub Pop, his 2007 album “Werewolves and Lollipops” went to #1 on Billboard’s Top Comedy Albums, establishing him as one of the finest stand-up comedians currently performing.

Katie's Craft Corner: Decoupage Easter eggs

·

Easter eggs are typically all made in the same manner – hard boil some eggs, mix some coloring agent (tablet, food coloring, plant) and vinegar, let egg sit and absorb color. In reality, there’s many ways to cover a white shell, and one of those ways is decoupage.

Katie's Craft Corner: Easter Eggs

·

When someone says “dyeing Easter eggs,” I believe one naturally thinks of either boxed Paas kits with those entertaining fizzy pellets or, if you were from a more frugal household, McCormick food coloring with which you could play mad scientist and mix colors. Certainly, before searching for ideas for this Easter Craft Corner, I never thought of doing anything differently.

Food Scoop: Lemon Bars

·

By my standards, lemon bars are a rare cookie, a two-layered combination of shortbread and custard-like lemon toping. They seem to appear mostly at potlucks or church picnics. For all that they seem to be a favorite of the pre-baby boomer crowd. They’re incredibly easy. I discovered this when I made them myself.

U.S. Air Force band, choir performs at Pease

·

When the average person hears the word “military,” the typical mental image is one of fighter jets, tanks and artillery. But one aspect of the United States Armed Forces that tends to go overlooked are the men and women armed with trombones and drumsticks.

Food Scoop: Eggs

·

Last night, I was having supper with my folks and long-time family friends Bonnie and Will. The conversation turned eventually to chickens – specifically, egg-laying hens. Bonnie has had a flock of hens for several years, and typically has several dozen beautiful, fresh eggs in her refrigerator as a result.

Matt On Music: Malian music

·

Following the 2012 takeover of Northern Mali by Islamic fundamentalist groups – in which the attempts of implementing sharia resulted in popular music being banned – and the January 2013 French intervention, 2013 ended up being perhaps the finest year for Malian music. Now, with two fine albums released this year, one of which is a fantastic celebration of Malian music as a whole, 2014 is looking to be a great year for it as well.

Students tribute king of pop

·

Audience members were dazzled with songs, dances and costumes honoring the king of pop in the Michael Jackson tribute show “This Is It” held at Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center Auditorium on April 2.

Katie's Craft Corner: Color wheel quilt

·

As a lover and collector of yarn, I often find myself searching for online stores where I can at least daydream about the gorgeous colors and textures of luxury yarn even if I can’t cough up $30 for a single skein.

Matt On Music: Cloud Nothings and The Men

·

Punk rock can be a monotonous genre when people are unwilling to grow up. Thankfully, some punk artists recognize the importance of change and use it to release better, more mature (or at least different) albums.
