The city of Ypsilanti’s Downtown Development Authority is coordinating a Façade Grant application for business and property owners in the DDA districts. The competitive grant program, funded through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, will afford property and business owners the opportunity to obtain up to a 50 percent match for façade improvements.
Ypsilanti Public Schools announced it will be hosting a public forum Tuesday to discuss its pending budget cuts with the community. The announcement, made in a noon press release from the district, comes after the Board of Education decided to hold a series of meetings to involve the public in its decision-making process. A City of Ypsilanti resident was found deceased at approximately 2 p.m. today in the parking lot near the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority’s Ypsilanti Transit Center on Pearl Street. Evidence suggests the 52-year-old female may have overdosed, according to a media release from the Ypsilanti Police Department.

Burglary: At approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 1500 block of Harvest Lane in Superior Township for a burglary.
Officials are now reporting the 19-year-old suspected of carrying a concealed weapon near West Middle School was carrying a BB gun and “had no intent to harm anyone.”

The 19-year-old Ypsilanti resident arrested in the May shooting death of 18-year-old Cortez Donald pled guilty to second-degree murder. The information is according to a Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office release, which said Daniel Haywood pled guilty to a felony firearm charges in addition to the murder charge. The release said Haywood could face a minimum of 20 years in prison with the two convictions. The original incident took place on May 28, near Donald’s home at the 200 block Kirk Street in Ypsilanti Township.

City Council unanimously passed an ordinance on first reading Tuesday allowing Ypsilanti residents to keep bees. The ordinance had been considered by City Council last month, but decided a permit process should be included with the original language and postponed the matter before a vote was taken. If approved on a second reading the ordinance would give residents the opportunity to apply for a permit to keep no more than two bee hives on a parcel of land.
