MESA braves cold to raise Syrian civil war awareness

The Middle Eastern Student Association at Eastern Michigan University braved the cold temperatures Tuesday afternoon to raise student awareness about the Syrian civil war and display the daily suffering the eight million displaced Syrian refugees experience as result of the violence and political unrest that continues to plague their country. MESA members set up a model Syrian refugee tent outside the Student Center to show passing students exactly how these refugees are living.

Phonathon for EMU Foundation— Eastern Michigan University students are urged to sign up for the phonathon this spring. The funds that will be offered through callers of the phonathon are to support EMU.

EMU launches advising week

·

Eastern Michigan University kicked off advising week in Halle Library Monday afternoon with an Academic Advising and Career Development Center booth run by people from both the academia and employment sections. These representatives were on hand to teach students how to set up appointments for the center, discuss the “dos” and “don’ts” of resumes and talk about interviewing skills.


Taste of Ypsilanti gives local residents exposure to the EMU community

Spectators at the Eastern Michigan University basketball game Saturday experienced more than just an Eagle Victory over Northern Illinois University. In the lobby of the Convocation Center was an event called “A Taste of Ypsilanti,” which gave the Eagle Basketball fans in attendance the chance to sample local Ypsilanti restaurants for just a dollar a meal.

Board of Regents Meeting Schedule— Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents meeting will be held at Welch Hall, room 201, on Tuesday, March 25. The meeting time will be at 1:30 p.m. Other committee meetings will also be held in Welch Hall throughout the day.




Rec/IM’s fitness program sees growth

When the Rec/IM decided to no longer use the services of B Young B Fit last semester, graduate assistant Jeff Phillips saw an opportunity to expand the fitness program.

Student petitions EMU to teach sign language

·

Between 500,000 and 2,000,000 use American Sign Language, according to a study from the Gallaudet University, a private university that specializes in teaching the deaf. Despite teaching a variety of foreign languages and having a well-respected special education program with a hearing impairment program, EMU does not currently teach any ASL courses.

Feb. 11 Police responded to an incident of arson at Phelps Hall when an unidentified perpetrator used a lighter to burn a smiley face pattern into the ceiling panels of the laundry room. There are no suspects at this time.

Flash mob surprises students, demonstrates unity

Students from the Middle Eastern Student Association danced a traditional Middle Eastern dance called Dabke. As diverse as the region is, Dabke is one form of dance that is universally performed throughout the Middle East.


EMU president, CFO give strategic planning budget

Martin went over the essence of what EMU stands for: the university’s mission, vision, and values. Then, she went over the goals that were set for EMU for the near future. Martin also went over things that EMU has done to become a nurturing place for innovation and learning. Later, Martin and Lumm opened the floor for questions from the audience.

Explore Eastern to take place March 8— Eastern Michigan University will host the Explore Eastern Open House, Saturday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, which is designed to familiarize prospective EMU students with the university, is open to transfer and high school students.

While some Eagles will migrate to warmer temperatures and take restful vacations next week, others will be participating in the several Alternative Spring Break programs offered through Eastern Michigan University’s Volunteers Incorporating Service into our Neighborhoods volunteer center.
