Rally honors slain students

On Thursday, the Increase The Peace Rally & Walk kicked off in front of the north doors of the Student Center. This student rally and march was against the recent spat of violence and crime that has plagued the community at Eastern Michigan University since the murder of Julia Niswender almost a year ago. Several hundred people showed up for the event.

Eastern Michigan University STEM fields— According to an article from Eastern Michigan University’s Division of Communications, the College Database has placed EMU as one of the top 50 colleges for advancing women in science, technology, engineering and math fields. How safe is Ypsilanti?

In the past year, three homicides occurred in the area directly north of campus. In December 2012, junior communication and electronic media and film studies major Julia Niswender was presumably murdered in her apartment at Peninsular Place. The father of an EMU student was killed in a dispute in March 2013 in the same complex, and sophomore communication major and student-athlete Demarius Reed was found dead in the University Green apartments, down the street from Peninsular Place.

Second public safety forum held in Student Center

At least one person walked by the body of Demarius Reed after as was fatally shot, and as many as six people heard gunfire the night of the murder in his apartment complex according to interim Ypsilanti Police Chief Tony DeGiusti.

EMU student assaulted overnight

Another Eastern Michigan University student was assaulted in the area around Leforge Ave. yesterday night, the third such incident in the area in recent days and the fourth in the immediate area – all victimizing EMU students. According to a timely warning issued by the university, an EMU student was assaulted at his apartment when he answered a knock on his door.

Second public safety forum to be held this afternoon

Less than a week after a public forum was held at the Student Center at which Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin, Police Chief Robert Heighes and Vice President for Communications Robert Kraft discussed and answered questions regarding campus safety and the death of EMU student-athlete Demarius Reed, the university announced it would be holding another forum this afternoon. This forum, scheduled for 4 p.m., will also include Ypsilanti Interim Police Chief Tony DiGiusti.

Designer advises students on a variety of topics

Designer Kami Michels from Kimberly Weder Designs spoke to EMU interior design students on Wednesday in Roosevelt Hall about what life can be like after graduation as an interior designer. Students who attended received free refreshments and Learning Beyond the Classroom credit.

Student Government addresses AATA bus pas policy

At last month’s student senate meeting, a resolution was passed to support the implementation of a $0.93 fee for Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority bus passes. If this policy is implemented, students will be able to use their Eagle IDs for unlimited use of the AAATA bus line.


Movie explores life of Muslim-American footballers

The Muslim Journeys fall program hosted a screening of the documentary “Fordson: Faith, Fasting, Football and the American Dream” on Wednesday night. The film follows the 2009 Fordson High School football season while displaying the struggle Muslim Arab-Americans face in post-September 11 society.
