EMU faculty member death Mark Gallup, 51, a lecturer in Eastern Michigan University’s communication, media and theatre arts program, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday. Gallup is survived by his wife of 23 years, Maria Showich-Gallup.

Michigan works to ban synthetic drug phenethylamine

The Michigan Board of Pharmacy was issued an imminent danger notification Wednesday from the Michigan Department of Community Health’s Director James Haveman to begin the process of making the synthetic drug phenethylamine illegal.

Student Government works on programs

With the fall semester wrapping up, Student Government is working on several initiatives to improve the student experience at Eastern Michigan University. Student Body President Mathew Norfleet recently gave an update on several programs his administration is developing.

The Ypsilanti Police Department released additional information late Thursday afternoon regarding its continuing investigation into the suspicious death of 23-year-old Eastern Michigan University student Julia Catherine Niswender.

Julea Ward case resolved Eastern Michigan University has settled the case of Julea Ward, who was released from the EMU counseling program for refusing to counsel a gay student. Ward will be awarded $75,000, according to a statement released by the university.

Bill could change concealed weapons law if passed

At the end of November, Michigan’s Senate voted to allow people who receive extra training to carry concealed weapons in previously gun-free zones such as colleges and churches. If passed by the Michigan House of Representatives, this bill will make several changes to the concealed weapon law already in place.

Students for an Ethical Participatory Education met with Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin Friday to discuss possible violation of EMU’s Code of Conduct by Adidas.



EMU’s History Department uses interactive lessons

Eastern Michigan University’s History Department is trying out a new way to teach history. Reacting to the Past is an academic role-playing game where students have to stay in character as historical figures and re-enact moments in history.

Michigan has been the focus of headlines since early Tuesday evening as it became the 24th state to enact right-to-work laws, when Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed two bills allowing workers the choice of paying for union dues.
