CAMPUS May 20 – A glass door was smashed out on West Cross Street at 10:56 p.m. May 21 – A juvenile was arrested after stealing a bike from the Buell Hall parking lot at 7:14 a.m. An unattended purse was reported stolen in Pray-Harrold at 1:23 p.m. A male was arrested for an EMU bench warrant at 1:28 p.m.


Proposed changes to charter involve weed consumption

Antonio Cosme, an Eastern Michigan University graduate who heads the Committee for a Safer Ypsilanti, said at a press conference at EMU May 23 that his group will promote an amendment to the Ypsilanti city charter to make “possession of small amounts of cannabis the lowest law enforcement priority.” Charles Ream of the Coalition for a Safer Michigan, another group supporting and promoting the proposed amendment, said it offers students a chance to affect public policy. “This is not about marijuana,” Ream said.

May 14 – A subject was driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol at 1:57 a.m.




Heart Walk raises funds for research

On Saturday, May 19, about 120 Eastern Michigan University faculty, staff, students and their families, including university President Susan Martin, gathered at Washtenaw Community College for the annual Ann Arbor American Heart Association Heart Walk.

Salmonella found, pet food recalled

LANSING- On April 2, a sample collected as part of routine retail animal feed surveillance by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Pesticide and Plant Pest Management division found Salmonella Infantis in a sample collected from an intact package of Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice Formula for Adult Dogs.



Incentive given to 'Live Ypsi'

As an incentive for Eastern Michigan University employees to move to Ypsilanti, a new program called Live Ypsi will offer employees between $5,000 and $10,000 in forgivable loans toward the purchase of a home in the city.

Dining Commons open for summer

·

Eastern Michigan University’s Dining Commons, located between Best, Wise, Buell and Downing residence halls, is now open for the summer semester with an all-you-can-eat buffet of homestyle entrees, pasta, grilled foods, soups, salads, stir-fry and desserts for $6.75. The Commons accepts cash, credit and the Advantage and Advantage Flex meal plans, which offer purchase options such as prepay for 27 meals and get three free, and receive 10 percent above the amount purchased respectively. Weekly menus are listed on the Dining Commons’ website www.emich.edu/dining/services/thecommons, and summer semester hours are 11 a.m.

Sentence given in unarmed robbery

Washtenaw County Trial Court Judge Archie Brown gave Jeremiah Kena Sawyer a 3-year-and-8-month sentence April 25, for the unarmed robbery of Eastern Michigan University student Darin Thomas Smith on Aug. 24, 2011.

Pancakes help promote aviation program

Alpha Eta Rho, Eastern Michigan University’s aviation fraternity, held their annual Pancake Breakfast and Fly-in on Saturday at Willow Run Airport. Fraternity members, flight students, family, friends and alumni, gathered at the Eagle Flight Center for the event to raise funds and promote the EMU Aviation program.
