McKenny Hall unveils Power of Connection exhibit

Students from Eastern Michigan University’s graduate historic preservation program cut the ribbon and unveiled a new exhibit that highlights the involvement of EMU student organizations over the past 166 years on Thursday, April 14 in McKenny Hall. The McKenny Art Gallery opened in 2014 and showcases a collection of historical photos, artifacts and student artwork engulfing the rich tradition of the institution.

The EMU Food Campus is going to be hosting a food drive in the Student Center all week. They are going to be accepting all non-perishable food items, anytime, in room 346. The semester is ending and students are deciding what their plans are for fall.

Nation Crime Victims Rights Week share information and raise awareness in the Student Center on April 14. 

EMU observes National Crime Victims Rights Week

In observance of National Crime Victims Rights Week from April 10-16, the Department of Public Safety, Crime Prevention, and Wellness Center partnered to share information with Eastern Michigan University community for an event dedicated to victims’ rights in the Student Center on Thursday, April 14. National Crime Victims’ Rights Week highlights challenges faced by victims and shines light to the everyday struggles and hardships they face as a result from their assaults. These themes accentuate the importance of early intervention and victim services, and establish a safe and compassionate environment where victims can share their stories and receive support. The coordinators of the event aimed to provide outreach as well as spread the word about the university’s many options and programs dealing with crime prevention.

EMU holds Green March for Autism Acceptance

“We don’t need more awareness. Everyone pretty much knows about autism, so we thought it’d be better to have a march for autism acceptance,” Theodore Coutilish, Eastern Michigan University’s Associate VP for Marketing said. The Green March for Autism Acceptance at EMU began in the Student Center at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday. Sally Burton-Hoyle and Callie Boik, the creators this this march, said this event took about a month to organize.

Eastern Michigan University’s Advising and Career Development Center and Peer Engagement Coach Program teamed up to host From College to Career, a workshop to help students build effective resumes and cover letters to send to employers on Thursday, April 7 in McKenny Hall. Lorraine McKnight, senior career coach, lectured on the components of a well written resume and how to incorporate community, campus and other involvements on a resume.


Spring Fest 2015

Migos to perform at Music Matters Charity Concert

Hip Hop trio Migos will perform at the Fifth Annual Music Matters Charity Concert at 8 p.m., April 13, in Hill Auditorium, 825 N University Ave, Ann Arbor. University of Michigan junior Matt Fisher, fundraising chair for Music Matters, said all proceeds from the concert will help fund a summer camp for underrepresented Detroit youth.

EMU helps future teachers succeed

“One of the things that young people generally can be convinced of is ‘I’d like to make a difference in the world,’ and if I come out of a community and if I go back to that community – or even one very similar to it – I’m more likely to persist,” Michael Sayler said. Education is a popular topic in the 2016 presidential election, focusing on urban education.

Senate passes resolution to provide music hall renovations

The Student Government Senate passed a resolution unanimously to provide funding for renovations to the Alexander Music Hall at its regular meeting Tuesday night in the Student Center. The resolution amends the Student Government Budget FY16 to allocate $30,000 to the summer-long renovations, totaling at $74,000.

College students fight to end tax on tampons

Most likely at some point in their life, every female between the ages of 12-50 have quietly whispered to another female, “Hey, do you have a tampon on you?” Women’s menstrual products, such as tampons and pads, are a necessity to females.

Morton and Starr victor in student government elections

r Tanasia Morton and Joshua Starr were elected as Student Government President and Vice President, respectively, for the 2016-17 academic year, taking 68% of the total votes.  After hearing the results of the election, Morton said she is excited and grateful about her win. “[I am] ready to make very positive change on campus and do everything that I promised I said I was going to do,” Morton said. Starr said after he and Morton institute the changes they promised in their candidacy, they will focus on getting more students engaged in Student Government. “We had a lot of plans coming into this election and now that we’ve won, we can start working on them to the best of our ability,” Starr said. Starr said students should watch for changes on campus during the next academic year.
