Transitioning from high school to a university can be a huge stressor. There are tips that can make this transition go smoothly, though, both for incoming freshman and students transferring from a community college. Here are some helpful advice and information.

“The freshman 15” is a phrase that can elicit horror among college students everywhere. It refers to the weight that some college freshmen gain as a result of partying, overeating and making unhealthy food choices in the school cafeteria.



Speakers celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was remembered and celebrated by Eastern Michigan University students and faculty on campus when they gathered at the statue of the civil rights pioneer on Wednesday, August 28.

Local rehab center to hold event

On Sept. 8, Ann Arbor-based rehabilitation facility Dawn Farm will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with a free event, the Dawn Farm Jamboree, which will include auctions, music from soul and blues band NoteWorthy, hayrides and pony rides. The event is scheduled to be from 1-6 p.m.

Islam debate held on EMU campus

On August 10, a symposium called “Is Islam a Religion of Peace?” was held at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center. The event was sponsored by Ave Maria Radio, a syndicated Catholic radio station based in Ann Arbor. Speakers included Robert Spencer, author and director of anti-Islam blog Jihad Watch, in the featured debate against Shadid Lewis of the Muslim Debate Initiative in the US, and the event concluded with a Mass celebrated by the Rev. Earl A. Boyea, bishop of Lansing.

Matt on Music: End of summer music guide, part 1

Although the Echo stops running from the end of June until the end of summer, I’ve been hard at work, listening to music, studying other reviews and writing. Part of the pleasure of music to me is writing about it. So I figured, rather than post online material throughout the summer, I could just put my opinions on all the music I’ve been listening to this summer into a couple very long articles. Part two will come at the beginning of the school year.

Sequester harms hospital funds, cancer patients

Who needs death panels when you can just cut medical funding? Thanks to the sequester, or budget cuts, continually butchering various government-funded operations, that option is now available. Along with cuts to air traffic control and other operations, subsidized medical research and treatments are also getting majorly cut back thanks to our government’s continued inability to balance a budget. According to an April 3 Washington Post article, “Cancer clinics across the country have begun turning away thousands of Medicare patients, blaming the sequester budget cuts.
