U of M’s new gender-neutral housing option great idea

It’s not very often a university is commended for being totally inclusive to people who exist outside of the gender binary. But recently, the University of Michigan announced gender-neutral university housing will be an option on their campus in Ann Arbor at the start of the next fall semester.

According to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, in 2011 there was a net loss of 47,347 people from the state. Michigan’s population has decreased in the last decade, while the entire American population increased. The number of people aged 25-34 living in Michigan has also been in decline since 2000.

It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air. What’s the best way to show your love? Buy stuff. At least, that’s what the endless advertisements for products one might gift on Valentine’s Day are advocating.

Flash Mob to back ending of violence

V-Day doesn’t just stand for Valentine’s Day anymore. For fifteen years now, Vagina Day has been celebrated to raise awareness about violence against woman. One in three women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, according to One Billion Rising’s website; the organization works for the prevention of violence against women.

Men’s golf places 3rd at MAC Match Play

The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team got off to a great start this season after finishing in third place at the Mid-American Conference Match Play tournament. The tournament was held at the Lake Jovita Golf Course in Dade City, Fla., and was hosted by Ball State University.

All men, women swimmers qualify for finals

This past weekend, both the Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s swim teams showcased their underclassmen while sprinkling in a few upperclassmen at the Ohio State Winter Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.



	EMU is celebrating its 1,005 international students Feb. 11-14.

International Week begins

Out of the more than seven billion people in the world spanning across roughly 196 countries, Eastern Michigan University has 1,005 international students from 81 countries. During the week of Feb. 11-14, EMU plans to acknowledge these students with their own event.

Wrestling loses 31-6 in last MAC dual meet

In the team’s last Mid-American Conference dual meet, the Eastern Michigan University men’s wrestling team fell to the Central Michigan University Chippewas on Friday in Mount Pleasant, Mich.


	The team has high hopes for the remainder of the season despite the early loss. EMU’s next match is in Anchorage, Alaska.

Close defeat for Eagles gymnastics vs. Ball State

The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team hosted a match against the Ball State University Cardinals Saturday night. The Eagles suffered yet another close defeat, this time losing by a combined score of 194.075-193.975.

Schatzel appointed to three-year term on board of directors

Eastern Michigan University Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Kim Schatzel has been appointed to a three-year term on the board of directors for the Health Alliance Plan of Michigan by the Henry Ford Health System’s board of trustees.

The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team rebounded from a heartbreaking loss to Akron Wednesday night by defeating the Ohio University Bobcats on Saturday afternoon, 64-57.

Eagle women drop heartbreaker to Akron, 82-81

Despite junior Natachia Watkins putting up her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds, it was not enough as the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team lost to the University of Akron Zips with 0.07 seconds left, 82-81, at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.


‘Bad things happen to a lousy tipper’s food’

While surfing the Internet recently, I stumbled upon an infuriating tidbit on Reddit about a St. Louis waitress who was fired over posting a photo of a rude note left on a receipt. The message, “I give God 10 percent. Why do you get 18?” was written by Pastor Alois Bell.


	Glenn Bryant was suspended from the EMU men’s basketball team Wednesday following his arraignment on felony assault and domestic violence charges.

Eagle men earn commanding win over Buffalo, 65-46

Glenn Bryant showed no signs of being bothered by a sore knee Wednesday night as the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team beat the Buffalo University Bulls 65-46 at the Convocation Center. “I didn’t miss any practice [all week],” Bryant said after the game.



Norfleet to address students

Eastern Michigan University Student Body President Matthew Norfleet will be giving the State of the Student Body Address on Monday in Ballroom B of the Student Center from 5:30-6:30 p.m., during which he will discuss Student Government’s priorities, initiatives and achievements for the 2012-13 academic year.
