Kitchen 101: Thanksgiving cupcakes

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I thought it’d be a great time to give you a cool idea to make your meal special. Unfortunately, I had a terrible lapse of judgment and did a two-page Thanksgiving blow out last year. So, I was kind of out of ideas this year. Luckily, shortsightedness is the mother of invention.

Thanksgiving is a week away: The time for seeing family, reminiscing on the things we are grateful for and eating many different kinds of food. Jamell Harris, number 32 on the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team, said he’s definitely going to enjoy the day.

SEPE asks EMU to cut ties with Adidas for unfair pay

The Eastern Michigan University student organization Students for an Ethical Participatory Education have demanded that EMU sever its contract with Adidas unless its workers in Indonesia were paid $1.8 million. SEPE delivered a letter to EMU President Susan Martin’s office Oct. 18, but members of the organization said they still have not received a reply.


Troy recalls mayor for radical opinions

Janice Daniels, the mayor of Troy, Mich., was recalled Nov. 6 by a vote of 52 percent. The recall effort was centered around Daniels’ views on gay marriage and her opposition to a transit center.


EMU Board of Regents adds two members

·

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder announced the appointments of Mary Treder Lang and James “Jim” Webb to the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents on Tuesday. Treder Lang and Webb will replace current board Chairman Roy Wilbanks and immediate past Chairman Tom Sidlik, whose eight-year terms expire at the end of 2012.

Split Congress must work to solve issues

With 53 Democrats, two Independents and 45 Republicans in the Senate, the Democratic Party reigns. While in the House of Representatives, there is a Republican majority with 241 Republicans and 194 Democrats, which leads some Americans to ask, “Will anything get done?”

Yellow ribbons around EMU campus Eastern Michigan University’s student veterans have been honoring Michigan residents who died in Iraq and Afghanistan by placing 223 yellow ribbons on trees around campus. The ribbons list the soldier’s name, city of residence, operation they were involved in and date of death.

Scheduling for winter semester offers opportunities, challenges

Registration for the winter semester is now well under way, and like most students here at Eastern Michigan University, you have probably been scrambling to snatch up coveted spots in class rosters. But if you’re among the students who take one look at the extensive list of available courses and feel like crying, registration can feel overwhelming.

Volleyball team wins final match of season

The Eastern Michigan University women’s volleyball team won their final match of the regular season Nov. 10 at the Convocation Center. The Eagles celebrated Senior Night with a 3-2 win against the University of Toledo Rockets (29-27, 23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-11).

NCAA reprimands former EMU women's basketball coach

The NCAA announced further sanctions on the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team Nov. 8 resulting from rules violations that took place during the 2009-10 season. The team had already imposed sanctions on itself, however, the NCAA handed down its own punishment on several individuals involved.

Getting tired of just a two party system

By the time these words are printed and read, the oh-so important presidential election will already be over. We will know whether our country will ascend to unprecedented heights of glory or plummet to the status of a developing nation. Of course, the closing of the electric campaign season means, perhaps most importantly, the end of irritating, often-misinformed tweets and Facebook statuses pertaining to elections.
