Robber at large after local heist

An armed robbery occurred in the 2000 block of Washtenaw Avenue at a convenience store Monday morning. Deputies arrived at the scene and discovered the suspect had entered the Sunoco gas station at 8:17 a.m., walked up to the cashier and produced a black handgun.

Eastern launches 'Keys to Degrees' for single parents

Beginning in the summer of 2011, single parents will be offered more funding and support to earn higher education from Eastern Michigan University through a program called “Keys to Degrees,” funded by a $400,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Eastern Michigan's Abraham nearly breaks record in women's 60-meter dash at Bowen

Eastern Michigan University finished the EMU Invite, Saturday, with much to be proud about on Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Fieldhouse. Ashlee Abraham led the way winning the women’s 60-meter dash with a near record time, 7.47, just two-hundredths of a second shy of the record held by Latrese Taylor of Akron, set in 2000. Abraham captured her victory in the 60-meter dash over a former NCAA champion from U of M, Tiffany Ofili.

Women's basketball goes 4-0 over break

While you were out shopping, opening presents and sipping on eggnog, the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball team was hard at work over winter break. The Eagles went 4-0 between Dec. 11-28 the Eagles’ record advanced to 9-5 on the season.

Martin vows more transparency

Transparency will be one of the top items on the list of things to accomplish in 2011 for Eastern Michigan University officials. President Susan Martin said transparency is something that will be ongoing at EMU. “We’re going to continue that,” she said.

Woodruff's opens in wake of closings

Downtown Ypsilanti has become bare, with Pub 13, Savoy (once known as Club Divine), The Best Damn Sports Bar, J’Neil’s and Key Stone Underground Martini Bar all closing within a short span of time. Depot Town however, just got a new bar up and running. Woodruff’s is located next to Frenchie’s and Sidetracks, and just opened Nov. 29.

Pease hosts Shakesperean ballet recital

Pease Auditorium is not the most ideal place for a ballet. Every year, however, Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Music and Dance makes it work to put one on. This year the performance was facilitated by a brand-new stage extension, and the magic of Shakespeare was set.

The White House hosted a series of conference calls with reporters last week featuring several university presidents and two members of President Obama’s cabinet to drum up support for the DREAM Act.

VISION collects presents for kids

This Christmas season, students are being given the chance to help brighten a child’s holiday by donating Christmas presents to children in the Washtenaw County area. Eastern Michigan University’s VISION office is working with the Salvation Army to collect donated gifts from students.
