Former Detroit Tiger goes to World Series

The San Francisco Giants are finally World Series Champions, after beating the Texas Rangers 3-1 in Game Five on Monday night at the Ballpark in Arlington. The last time the Giants won the World Series it was 1954, the team played in New York, and Willie Mays was 23-years-old

But when you think about dodge ball you probably don’t think of people playing intense, high-speed and out-for-blood games. There is an actual Dodge Ball Club right here at Eastern Michigan University that travels to different states and schools to compete.

Collaborative show transforms fibers

As you walk in the door of the Eastern Michigan University art gallery, there is a noticeable change from the norm. Instead of canvases lining the walls and sculptures placed on pedestals, quilts, tapestries and artfully sculpted yarns decorate the space.

Career fair brings job opportunities to EMU

Students packed and scurried to the Student Center Ballroom in hopes of obtaining an internship or job with one of more than 30 companies that represented the Diversity Career Fair that took place last Thursday. This was the sixth year of the Diversity Career Fair hosted by the University of Advising and Career Development Center.

EMU org SAGA aims to defeat homophobia in sports

It’s common for homophobia to be overlooked in the world of sports, but such actions were the inspiration for Eastern Michigan University’s Student Alliance for Gay Athletes (and Allies). “A friend was at a team party where he was being harassed and verbally abused and we didn’t want anyone else to go through that,” said Maggie Manville, co-founder of SAGA.

Ypsilanti police seek more information on rape of woman just off campus

A woman was raped last Thursday at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Cornell Street according to an informational release from the Eastern Michigan University Police Department. The woman was not an EMU student. She was getting out of her vehicle when a group of males pulled up in a four-door black Kia Soul.

'Hamlet' shows new viewpoints

Friday in Quirk Theater, director Lee Stille’s “Hamlet” opened the EMU theater season. Written by renowned playwright William Shakespeare, this show offers everything a tragedy is supposed to represent. With ghosts, blood, vengeance and character death, it covers all aspects of its genre. Audience members are introduced to the suspenseful mood with a gothic-style slide show and haunting music leading up and into the first act.

EMU ranks 81 in national sex health

Sex is everywhere you look. It’s on TV, it’s online and it’s in stores. It’s seen as glamorous and popular on the covers of magazines and on shows like “Gossip Girl.” Its potentially harsh consequences are on display on shows like “16 and Pregnant” and in the carefully hidden condom aisles.

The Eastern Michigan University Choir and the Symphonic Band will each perform concerts this weekend at Pease Auditorium for the first time this semester. Trey Jacobs, director of choral activities, will lead the University Choir at 8 p.m.

Last Friday morning, several top Eastern Michigan University officials held a meeting with Carrie Hessler-Radelet, the deputy director of the Peace Corps, to discuss a new partnership between EMU and the Peace Corps.

Pennies for Pencils hosts 5k to buy school supplies

This Saturday at Eastern Michigan University, Pennies for Pencils is hosting the 5K Pumpkin Run/Walk to raise money to buy school supplies for the Willow Run School District as well as Franklin Middle School in Wayne, Mich. The entry fee is $20 for those older than 12 and $10 for those younger.
