EMU makes exceptions for underage drinkers

Eastern Michigan University has developed a new policy regarding underage drinking in response to a statewide medical amnesty law in effect since June 1 that creates exceptions to Michigan’s Minor in Possession laws. The new law states that a person under 21 years of age who voluntarily seeks medical treatment or accompanies an individual who voluntarily seeks medical treatment for overconsumption of alcohol will be exempt from a violation for the purchase, consumption or possession of alcohol.

Smoke-free Air Law has no strong effect on bar sales

A Sept. 17 report released by the Michigan Department of Community Health found the Dr. Ron Davis Smoke-free Air Law, effective since May 1, 2010, did not have a significantly negative impact on bar, restaurant or cigarette sales in Michigan.


Julea Ward’s case trial next month

The case of a former Eastern Michigan University student being dismissed from the university’s counseling program for refusing to counsel a gay client is set to go to trial next month. Julea Ward was enrolled in a counseling program at EMU where students counsel five to eight clients a semester from the general public.
