Response to 'Letter to the editor': Team success should determine funds

In my Dec. 6 column, “Athletic funds could be used for academics,” I incorrectly used “Athletic Department” and “football program” interchangeably, as Eastern Michigan University athlete Katherine Anderson’s letter stated.

Anderson was correct to call me out on this. There are successful EMU athletic programs such as track and field, swimming and cross-country. These teams and others are consistently competitive. The football program, however, is not.

An increase in any funding by the Board of Regents should go towards academic programs; if they do increase the Athletic Department’s budget, it should not go to the consistently failing football program, but rather the successful ones. Why award failure?
