The Eastern Michigan athletics program has seen some ups and downs in the last year, which includes a MAC Tournament title by the women’s volleyball team, an appearance in the Camellia Bowl for the football team, and a court ruling that forced EMU to reinstate the softball and women’s tennis teams.

The Eastern Michigan baseball team hosted Concordia on Wednesday, March 27, at Oestrike Stadium. It was the second home game of the season for the Eagles and they have won both. EMU defeated Concordia 11-6, a day after a win over Northwestern Ohio. Thomas House started for Eastern Michigan.

ESPN is giving EMU students a chance to gain valuable experience broadcasting Eastern Michigan’s games. Every year ESPN airs hundreds of live broadcasts of professional and collegiate athletics ranging from NFL football to division II rowing. ESPN can reach millions of viewers each year through its multiple cable channels and online streaming service.

The first full day of the 2019 NCAA Tournament began on Thursday, March 21, as Minnesota and Louisville faced off in Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. There would be 32 games played in the next two days at various locations.

The Eastern Michigan gymnastics team placed third at the Mid-American Championships on Saturday in DeKalb, Illinois. The team finished with a 195.350 score, behind Northern Illinois (195.975) and Central Michigan (195.575). The Eagles fell 0.625 points short of winning their fourth conference championship.

Eastern Michigan held their 2019 Pro Day on March 22 in their indoor practice facility, showcasing their 12 draft-eligible players in front of pro scouts. Over a dozen teams from the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL) were in attendance for the Pro Day, including the Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Eastern Michigan Baseball opened Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series sweep versus rival Northern Illinois on March 22-24 at Ralph McKinzie Stadium in Dekalb, Ill. This marks the fifth time that the Eagles have been swept this season, leaving them with a MAC worst record of 3-19-1. The Huskies on the other hand now have a slightly better record of 7-16.

The Buffalo Women’s Basketball team has won the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship, taking down Ohio in the championship game Saturday, March 16 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Bulls will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history, after reaching the Sweet Sixteen last season.

Eastern Michigan senior forward Danielle Minott earned honorable mention All-MAC honors, alongside Oshlynn Brown (Ball State), Kendall McCoy (Miami OH), Mikaela Boyd (Toledo) and Deja Wimby (Western Michigan). Minott averaged 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in her senior season.

Going into its eighth season under head coach, Rob Murphy, the Eastern Michigan Men’s Basketball team had high optimism for the 2018-19 season. However, the Eagles finished the season with a 15-17 overall record. The team finished third in the MAC West with a 9-9 conference record.

Eastern Michigan Baseball defeated Dayton 10-2 on the road March 12 in Dayton, Ohio. The Eagles had their most explosive offensive performance of the year and were led by two hits, two runs and one RBI from Zachary Owings.

The Eastern Michigan Women’s Basketball team had its season come to an end with an 88-80 loss to rival Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarter finals. Jenna Annecchiarico had 21 points in the last game of her freshman year.

Eastern Michigan Baseball was swept in a four-game series against Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. at the Kennedy Center on March 9-10. The series consisted of two doubleheaders, something that the Eagles have struggled with all season. They have not won a double header game yet, losing all nine this year.

Danielle Minott scored the winning layup for Eastern Michigan with 2.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter, leading to a 61-59 victory over Akron at James A. Rhodes Arena on Monday, March 11. The Eagles move on to the quarterfinals round of the MAC Tournament to play Central Michigan in Cleveland on March 13 at noon.
