Examining the option of male birth control

Recent events are causing me to question whether we are living in the 21st century or the Middle Ages. From Michigan’s newly instated “rape insurance” policy to the “backlog of 11,000 untested rape kits” in Detroit as reported by MSNBC, the historical pattern in which women pay the price for events outside of their control continues.

Panel discusses sexual violence on college campuses

A panel discussion on sexual violence titled, “Addressing Sexual Violence on College Campuses: A Panel and Workshop,” was held at McKenny Hall Thursday to address the elements of sexual violence and the dangerous situations victims find themselves in, like stalking, harassment and rape.

'Operation Smile' comes to Eastern

Smiles are contagious, or at least those are the results of a study conducted in Sweden at Uppsala University. Yale Scientific Magazine reports, “They found that genuine smiles directly induced smiles from the participants.”

Alumnus Nathan Bomey to present March 24

Nathan Bomey, a reporter at The Detroit Free Press and 2006 Eastern Michigan University journalism and political science alumnus, will give a presentation about how he covered the Detroit Bankruptcy Monday, March 24 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Pray-Harrold room 213. The event is presented by EMU’s journalism program, the Department of English, EMU Student Media and the Department of Political Science.

Panel addresses conflict in Ukraine

As the showdown in Ukraine continues to escalate, Kiev said its conflict with Russia was moving into a “military” phase after a Ukrainian serviceman was shot dead in Crimea by Russian forces, The Irish Times reported Tuesday.

Book Drive— March is National Reading Month, and America Reads is joining with Eastern Michigan University’s VISION group to host a children’s book drive. The drive will be held between now and March 31. Anyone seeking to donate to the drive can look for drop-off boxes in Porter, Halle and in the VISION Volunteer Center.

EMU professors give presentation highlighting ways to keep incarcerated mothers in the lives of their children

Eastern Michigan University associate professors of social work Barbara Walters and Jennifer Fritz held a presentation called “Prison of Silence: The Invisibility of Incarcerated Women and Their Children” at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Held in room 300 of Halle Library, the presentation highlighted ways to keep incarcerated mothers in their children’s lives.

Justin Moore performs at Convocation Center

Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center would have looked more at home Saturday night if it were surrounded by rows of corn and wheat fields instead of standing vigil on the border of EMU’s campus. Four-wheel drive trucks, girls clad in short skirts and cowboy boots and more guys in flannel since Nirvana was touring descended upon it in droves for the Justin Moore concert.

Current SG president unopposed as elections grow near

A write-in vote could change that, but as of now, there is no one campaigning against Miller or his running mate for vice president, Steven Cole. Cole, a sophomore at EMU majoring in political science, is involved with the Honors College. He is also president of the Mock Trial Club and Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science National Honor Society, and he plans to attend law school after graduation.

With tax season in full swing, the Eastern Michigan University College of Business and Beta Alpha Psi accounting club are helping students and members of the local community get more bang for their buck this year by offering free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
