Granholm's latest budget plan to tax entertainment tickets

In an effort to balance the state’s budget, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced last week her latest budget will include nearly $1 billion in tax increases, a few of which will force Michigan residents to tighten their spending even more.

The plan calls for an additional 25-cent increase in the price of cigarettes, which already carry a $2 tax as it is. Other non-cigarette tobacco products, such as cigars, are expected to double under the plan.

Other product-specific increases include bottled water, vending machine items and tickets to live entertainment. While no specifics were given, this is likely to include sporting events, theatrical productions and concerts, among others.

Also included in the proposed plan is nearly $2 billion in budget cuts.
