For the entertainment and pleasure of the Eastern Michigan University community, EMU has decided to have an exhibit entitled “Contemporary Sculpture” in the University Art Gallery.
“We were asked to do a three-dimensional exhibit by the exhibition committee. It was a good way to get the attention of sculptors and people who are interested in their work,” said Nelson.
Dehoog added, “We were looking for artists who used materials in unusual ways. The word ‘contemporary’ means out of the normal style.”
Though you could have walked in the exhibit and just looked at the sculptures and never wondered about anything else, Dehoog and Nelson had a different perspective of the artwork and how they came to life.
A piece called “Lost Landscape” by Stephen Cartwright looks like a subterranean map layered blue. During the discussion Dehoog gave his point of view.
“It’s a geological piece. On first inspection it is a subtle piece but it tells about how Fort Peck was flooded when they dammed up the Missouri river and tells us what will happen if we aren’t careful. It is saying that Fort Peck is now sort of a fake man made thing.”
“Another Tanker” by an artist named Travis was a painting, a sculpture and used material from Travis’ leftover art projects from the students in his class.
“Art has no boundaries,” Nelson said. “The art is both the painting and the sculpture and you can see in the original piece the splattering of the paint on the wall by the tank.”
Art is something we should all take time to appreciate and enjoy just to spread our own mental pictures. This art exhibit is just one of those things you just have to go and feel yourself. “Contemporary Sculpture” will be on display in the University Gallery until Nov. 5.
