Get Involved!

Even though Eastern Michigan University’s student body consists mostly of nontraditional students and commuters who have a very nine to five mentality, and, at times, can feel more like a community college, there are hundreds of student organizations to get involved with and more events to attend and excursions than you can shake a stick at.

Of course, there are some bigger players than others in the game, but no student organization is more important than any other for one reason: Each student organization provides an opportunity to network with dozens, if not hundreds, of your peers; learn something new about yourself; display your talents and create friends you’ll have for the rest of your life.

The best place to find out about joining a student organization is in the Center for Student Involvement, which is located on the third floor of the Student Center. The CSI is home to the offices of several student organizations, as well as Student Government, Campus Life and Vision; most offices are staffed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some offices staying open until the Student Center closes.

If you’re looking to get involved on campus, but are having a difficult time finding your niche, check out one of the bigger organizations listed below first. Most of their members are highly involved on campus, super friendly, good looking and are always willing to point students looking to get involved in the right direction.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Eastern Michigan University Student Government is a unified body of dedicated students who work together to serve the campus community and student body by representing the student voice all over campus and in dozens of University committees. Student Government also hosts several events throughout the year that encourage students to become more politically aware and socially conscience.

Being part of Student Government is a sure-fire way to enhance your experience at EMU. Student Government provides a network where you can foster many beneficial relationships, both personally and professionally; you’ll learn the ins and outs of how Eastern is run, and you’ll even be eligible for Learning Beyond the Classroom credit.

CAMPUS LIFE

Through the programs and events put on by Campus Life, students are privy to a myriad of free activities to participate in including Friday Night Movies, Snack and Study and Sky Lounge. All of these events are great places to hang out with your peers and have good time, all while enjoying delicious free food and beverages.
Campus Life hosts excursions throughout the year that take students to events like Pistons’ games, musicals and the Detroit Institute of Art. Campus Life also hosts LeaderShape, the nation’s foremost leadership program that teaches to lead with integrity.

VISION

Vision is, hands down, the place you want to be if you’re dedicated to making the world a better place. With programs such as IMPACT, America Reads and Eastern Votes, Vision offers a way for everybody to give back to the community.

If hands-on activities are more your forte, Vision can hook you up with Habitat for Humanity or find a soup kitchen for you to volunteer in. If you’re the really adventurous type, participate in Alternative Breaks, where you’ll have the opportunity to travel across the country to do some good.

GREEK LIFE

If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop to get involved with a little bit of everything, EMU Greek Life is your place. From social and philanthropical events to intramural sports, leadership programs and community service opportunities, Greek Life allows you to get your toes wet in a variety of areas and the confidence and knowledge to run with something you’re passionate about.

Besides the local benefits and activites, most Greek organizations at Eastern provide a nation-wide network of alumni who will help guide you through your collegiate years and better prepare you for life after college by teaching you all of the things you won’t learn in a classroom.
