With final exams approaching fast, Eastern Michigan University’s Campus Life looks to provide new and interesting studying alternatives for the college student with his or her nose stuck in a book or feverishly typing out a final essay.
Snack and Study is just one of those alternatives.
“I’ve heard it’s a great place to get things done and have fun with your friends,” freshman Sarah Mikonowicz said.
Given the title, Snack and Study provides just that; an atmosphere for studying with friends and food to keep everyone’s energy up in the stressful end-of-the-year crunch. Among other study breaks and events like Club Halle, Snack and Study is geared toward the studying aspect of these social events.
“If I had to choose between Club Halle and Snack and Study, I might go to Snack and Study,” Mikonowicz said. “Club Halle has this dance party going on, but I need to study.”
There’s a little something for everyone at Snack and Study, from the environment of the Student Center Grand Ballroom to the surprising serving of breakfast food.
“I’ve been to Snack and Study, but I also work for it,” said Chase Stevens of EMU Catering. “I love the event because it’s so much fun.”
Featuring a free breakfast bar, some would say the Snack and Study is also known for its long lines.
“The line was a bit long, but I only waited for a few minutes,” Branden Cunningham said. “The food was just OK, by no means bad, but at the same time not great.”
Stevens said, “We serve bacon, eggs and potatoes, but you never know, there could be sausage. The food is awesome, but come early because we run out of it fast.”
With the food covered, all that’s left to do is the studying. Though Snack and Study provides an atmosphere conducive to studying, it is also a social event where friends and fellow students can bond over the stresses of finals. However, the experience is mixed for some.
“I have been to Snack and Study, and I thought it was OK,” Cunningham said. “I didn’t get much work done. I wasn’t there very long and mostly talked with friends. Also, they were serving breakfast food, which I thought was kind of odd, but I didn’t mind.”
For those more serious in their studying, quiet spaces will be available. But for those looking for a more social spin on study groups the Snack and Study is an ideal atmosphere.
“I would probably not recommend it if students need to get some hardcore studying done,” Cunningham said. “But if they had some causal work to do and had some time, it is fun to spend time with friends and attempt to do some homework.”
Stevens said,“I would recommend it to anyone. It’s fun because you get to be with your friends. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and easy to study.”
Snack and Study will be held at 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13 in the EMU Student Center Grand Ballroom.
