Before it’s out with the old and in with the new, one should be aware trends are often recycled and eras are re-occurring. So, before you go clearing out your closet, keep in mind some things from previous years are still acceptable, as some old trends have resurfaced.
Last year there was an explosion of military gear, trench coats and thigh high boots. Don’t throw any of these items away. Makclia Baldwin, Eastern Michigan University student and Forever 21 employee, said military-inspired vests, belts and jackets are still trending this year. This winter, green, khaki and navy are still key colors in the army theme.
Some of the trends heavily worn last season are still in this winter and should be paired with warmer pieces such as sweaters or boots, to adapt to the weather.
For example, if you want to bring new looks this year, pair lace tops from last season with pleated skirts or wide-leg pants; both seen during fashion week from top designers.
Not throwing away the old is always key when bringing the new into fashion. Both the spring and fall seasons are filled with glamour and signature pieces from the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Jillvonnie Flowers, a vintage expert, said every trend you could ever think of can be found in vintage shops.
Lots of the 2011 trends are key pieces from different moments in time, including high-waist jeans, belt purses and pleated skirts.
Patience, and quite frankly pure luck, are all that are needed hunting for the most current trends, Flowers said
“Since there aren’t sales orders, you get what you see when you shop vintage,” she said. “There is usually only one size and color of every item, which could be a terrible or very great thing.”
No trend is ever an original, just something recycled. Vintage shopping is a great and inexpensive way to find one-of-a-kind pieces. Going the vintage route, therefore, will ensure you won’t see ten other people in class wearing the same outfit as you.
Not only will you find items following current trends, but you might come across classic pieces that never go out of style. Although the clothing isn’t brand new, most stores won’t sell anything weathered or damaged, which shows the true quality of the product.
Other trendy stores such as Forever 21, H&M and Charlotte Russe are known for selling the top trends at affordable prices.
