EMU campus tweaking a few things

News in brief

Hand dryers made quieter

The newly renovated bathrooms in Pray-Harrold have been tweaked again.

In response to complaints regarding the dryers’ noise level, baffles were installed to control the loudness.
Complaints of the hand dryers reaching an uncomfortable noise level were made, causing the Health & Safety Committee at EMU to look into the problem. According to Kathryn Wilhoff, EMU’s health and safety director, industrial hygienists examined the hand dryers but found the noise levels did not violate standards set by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (8 hours of exposure to 90 decibels).

Wilhoff said no further complaints have been made since the update, but she urged bathroom users to keep hands at least 6 inches away from the blowers to continue managing noise levels. Reminder notes have been posted on the dryers to communicate the message.
