Five essentials for the winter season

The changing of the seasons gives the world outside a whole new look. Why not do the same for yourself?

You can’t wear a cami and cheer shorts in the winter, so if you’re going to be breaking out your favorite sweater and furry boots, you need to coordinate your cosmetics. Try experimenting with these products and finding a look that makes your cold weather favorites pop.

1.White Eyeliner: As the snow begins to fall, channel the icy look of winter by adding this staple to your cosmetic bag. White looks especially striking on darker skin tones, and fairer skin types can play with combinations of black and white to add contrast and interest to the eyes. Look for the Sephora Collection’s Nano Eyeliner in Pure White. A color this bold deserves a daring outfit, so drag out those tight skinny jeans you have to do a little dance to get into and a cute faux-leather jacket for an eye-catching outfit.

2.Red Lipstick: Red lips are a classic and sexy look that can easily be paired with a trendy, warm sweater dress and leggings. Pair it with heavy mascara (or fake lashes) and loose waves for a sultry yet sophisticated look. It is best used for evening affairs, so keep it on hand for those upcoming holiday soirees. Give Revlon’s Matte Lipstick in Really Red a try and be the life of the party. If you’re looking for a more casual, quirky look for the daytime, toss on a loose sweater (you can find plenty of adorable, cheap ones at local thrift stores) and go light on the rest of your makeup.

3.Chapstick: For times when more dramatic shades of lip color aren’t appropriate, you’ll want to shield your lips from the elements. Strong winds and chilly weather can take quite a toll on your lips, leaving them chapped, sore and bleeding—ouch! Protect yourself with a tube of chapstick. Remember those yummy-tasting Smackers chapsticks you used to love as a kid?

They’re not only easy to find (try every drugstore, ever), you’ll never want to stop licking your lips. The best part is, since they lack any coloring, you can wear it with absolutely anything in your wardrobe! Carmex is also good for soothing lips that are already chapped and leaves them with a warm, tingly feeling. You can find it just about anywhere as well.

4.Coral Blush: While pink seems to be the default choice for blush, coral compliments the darker feel of winter perfectly. The orange-ish tones match nearly any skin tone perfectly and add depth and warmth to the face. Leave those sassy pinks for the springtime and try Covergirl’s Cheekers Blush in Pretty Peach. After you put on foundation and powder, brush a little bit around your cheekbones to add instant color. Wear it with the aforementioned red lipstick for some extra oomph.

5.Hand Lotion: It’s not technically makeup, but nevertheless a necessity! The cold dries out skin like nothing else and with your hands being among the most visible body parts, they tend to get the worst of it. Walking around with hands so dry they feel like sandpaper is not attractive and definitely not conducive to any hand-holding. So be sure quench your skin’s thirst with Nivea Hand Crème. It comes in a convenient, purse-friendly tin, and the best part is it’s only one dollar! Also, the scent is not overwhelming, so you can go ahead and wear your favorite perfume with it. Cuddle season is eminent, but don’t you fear—add this to your wish list and you’ll be holding hands with that special someone in no time.
