Eastern Michigan University has named Kim Schatzel as its new provost and vice president, according to a release sent out to the campus community.
Pending approval by the Board of Regents, Schatzel’s appointment will be effective Jan. 3, 2012 and her annual salary will be $275,000.
Schatzel currently serves as dean of the College of Business at University of Michigan-Dearborn and has held the position since 2008. In addition to serving as dean, Schatzel is a marketing professor at UofM’s College of Business.
“Dr. Schatzel has proved to be an outstanding dean who brings a strong voice to lead and advocate for the faculty and Division of Academic Affairs,” said Susan Martin, president of EMU in a statement. “Her success in advancing academic excellence and in strategically building academic programs responsive to the needs of today’s students and employers and the State of Michigan, make her ideally suited for Eastern Michigan University. She understands Southeast Michigan and cares about the future of public universities at this difficult economic time.”
In addition to experience in academic leadership, Schatzel has corporate experience including more than 20 years of new venture and start up experience.
She served as Founding President and COO, and later CEO of ICM/Krebsoge, North America’s largest powdered metal components manufacturer.
Schatzel said her academic and business background has provided her with a foundation that recognizes the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation.
“As a business school dean, I am aware of the serious financial challenges facing institutions of higher education in Michigan and across the nation.,” she said in a statement. “It is only through a highly collaborative effort involving Eastern Michigan’s outstanding faculty and staff, in partnership with the university’s administration, business and community partners, governmental and legislative bodies, and alumni, that we can address these challenges.”
Schatzel received a docorate in business administration from Michigan State University in 1999 and has lived in Michigan for 27 years. As provost, she will lead academic affairs and more than 200 degree programs.
