Something you might not have known about the fashion community is it’s a science all of its own; it allows students to research textile science, not something typically thought of when one hears “textiles and merchandising.”
When you think of fashion you might think of runways, fashion designers and the clothes you wear. However it’s more than what’s seen from the outside – from all the people making it happen down to the price each item costs.
This major is committed to preparing students for careers in global retail industry positions in an increasingly diverse and technological world. Students in this major learn to develop and contribute to the economical and social wellbeing in the world.
The retail industry is a major employer in the United States. There is a high demand for new professionals that have graduated from four-year institutions. At EMU, students that are in this major are learning varies expects that are
variable in today’s society.
It’s a program bringing students from various parts of the fashion community and brings them together. Because of its small size overall, it allows students to get to know the professors that teach the classes.
EMU student and Apparel, Textile and Merchandising major Andre Moses is vice president of Fashion Avenue and had a lot to say about the program.
“My favorite part of being an Apparels, Textiles, and Merchandising major is how close we all are,” Moses said. “Our program is small, and it’s possible to take classes with the same people every semester. I love it. I love how we all hang out when not even in class.”
Eastern is well known for many things such as business, education and many more, but some students might not consider fashion as an option.
“I literally had no idea,” Moses said. “I think high school students all think that only art schools or schools in giant cities would have a fashion-based program. It surprised me to find out that Eastern had one. I was worried that because Eastern isn’t in some giant city that it would not be a good program or curriculum, but I was wrong.”
