Award opportunity

Humanitarian efforts resembling MLK's rewarded

It’s that time of year again. No, not the holiday season. It’s time for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards.

Every year, Eastern Michigan University holds the MLK President’s Luncheon and awards a member of the community who exemplifies the values instilled by Martin Luther King, Jr. It will be held on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012.

The winners of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award can either be a student or a member of the surrounding community. The only requirement is that they have made a significant impact on the university or community.

Two winners will be selected. If a student wins the $1000- or $750-award, it is credited to his or her student account. In order to be a student winner, one must have a commitment to improving the quality of life as Martin Luther King, Jr. would have done, have somehow serviced EMU or part of southeastern Michigan, be enrolled full-time and be in good standing with the university.

Anyone who meets the criteria is eligible for the chance to win the award and scholarship. Students can nominate themselves or someone they feel is deserving of the award. In order to be nominated, one must turn in a letter of support from an EMU faculty member, a typed essay of no more than two pages describing their achievements and a completed Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award application.

Applications can be picked up in the Office of Financial Aid, Center for Multicultural Affairs, Student Government Association Office, Office of Campus Life and Office of the Provost.

Non-student nominees must include a nomination letter, two letters of support and a resume.

Submissions for non-students must be turned in to the Office of Government at 207 Welch Hall or e-mailed to LGreden@emich.edu by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Submissions for students must be turned in to the Office of Financial Aid at 403 Pierce Hall or e-mailed to fa_scholarships@emich.edu by the same date.

Act fast, because late applications will not be accepted. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award is a great opportunity to be recognized for all of your hard work or help a friend or colleague who deserves it to be recognized.
