Make a difference this season

The holidays are approaching and as we all know it’s a time of giving and helping others.

It all starts with an idea and this one idea can help thousands. During this season it’s all about giving to others – helping others to get the same opportunities you might have, like going home and spending time with your family eating dinner.

United Way knows firsthand how special it is to spend time with family with food on your table and a place to
stay.

The United Way is an organization invested in helping out with the hunger and food needs around Washtenaw County. Its goal is to raise enough money to supply over 40 campaigns and 150 food banks. The need to raise support has been raised, as more families have been reported as in need this year.

United Way is a non-profit organization, which seeks to give families more access to resources, helping them build a better life for themselves and making the community stronger. United Way is a great organization to get everyone involved as a community, helping each other hand-in-hand. This year its goal is to raise $5,750,000 for various campaigns.

Not only does it give families resources to food, it gives them better access to healthier food. This is especially important during the winter months because it’s hard to come by fresh produce and meats.

All year round, the United Way helps various organizations raise money to help the causes they are working for.

Here at Eastern Michigan University, Government and Community Relations is involved with United Way. Kevin Kucera, who is charge of student affairs and enrollment management, gets involved in helping out United Way at Eastern. The goal this year is to raise $150,000 for health resources.

According to Deb Bratkovich, director of development for the United Way, the United Way helps with early childhood development, healthcare, schooling, university success, the elderly and the homeless.

The number one cause the United Way contributes to is shelters and the homeless.

Bratkovich feels strongly about being involved.

“It’s an opportunity where I can work where I know I can help people. It may be with people that are in trouble for the first time… I may not meet them all but I know I can help them while I know I’m making a difference.”

The Rocking for the Hungry campaign run by Food Gathers – an organization the United Way helps out – is currently going on now.
