Dressing fashionable and being yourself

The art of balancing the fun of fashion with the realities of everyday life isn’t a simple one. Christine Kue, a junior and a vocal music education major at Eastern Michigan University, seems to have perfected it.

“I have many styles,” Kue, who hails from Warren, Mich., said. “My everyday style is basically girly but simple. I like feeling comfortable in my clothes when going to class. But if it’s a night out with friends then my style is more sexy and chic.”

It’s easy to flip through pictures of the most recent award show or stills of supermodels strutting for style inspiration, but finding eye-catching ensembles that aren’t too itchy or just plain outlandish can prove somewhat challenging. Just imagine walking into your biology class wearing Lady Gaga’s bubble dress, for example.

On the other hand, Kue knows how to make the most of her day-to-day style with a practical but fashionable taste, which virtually any girl is capable of pulling off.

“I like how many celebs wear their clothes, but I feel like it’s not the kind of style that I could just put on and go to class,” Kue said.

Getting up and going to class can be challenging, especially at eight in the morning, when Kue’s day begins. As practical as she is fashionable, she finds time throughout the day to take care of the ordinary getting-ready business that usually occupies mornings.

“Because of my 8 a.m. classes, I don’t get all fashionista in the morning. But I will try to put some makeup on and do my hair during my free hours in the afternoon. To do my hair and makeup, it only takes me about forty minutes.”

It’s true Kue knows how to do hair, and as with all things, she knows how to adapt her favorite styles to suit her own personal, casual-cute look.

“I usually curl my hair because it’s so long, but if I am feeling lazy I’ll just leave it straight. I prefer the big hair so I tease my hair a lot of the time, even though it gets flat at the end of the day.”

What about makeup?

“Don’t over-do it because a lot of guys actually like the natural look on girls,” Kue said. “I have the naked palette which I really love and the colors are everyday colors that you can wear.”

And no one knows how to use color like Kue. She generally sticks to the always-classy combination of black and white for her everyday outfits.

“Black always makes me look slimmer so I go with black a lot. It really depends on the season and the trends as well.”

Kue enjoys shopping, especially at Forever 21, H & M and anywhere good deals are to be had. She has a soft spot for handbags and purses, especially from the affordable luxury brand Coach. While she’s not exactly a huge fan of earrings or necklaces, she loves her Fossil rose gold watch.

Her interests outside of fashion include a strong affinity for music.

“I love to sing, play guitar and piano. I love to listen to many kinds music as well.”
She also enjoys film. “I like to watch Korean dramas and romantic and action movies.”

The important thing to Christine Kue is maintaining originality and uniqueness, a trait that shines in her.

“Be yourself and don’t be afraid to express yourself in how you look. It doesn’t matter what others think about your style because as long as you feel good about yourself then it’s all good.”
