Leaky pipe stirs curiousity

Traffic cones and caution tape have surrounded a section of sidewalk along West Circle Drive for the last few days.

There was a large crack in the sidewalk, out of which steam was rising. The dirt and gravel along the sidewalk have almost turned black.

According to EMU’s vice president for communications, Walter Kraft, the steam was coming from a damaged underground pipe that supplied heat to one of the nearby buildings.

Kraft stressed the leaky pipe is not dangerous to students.

“There’s absolutely no hazard or danger, but it’s important to get fixed so that heat
can continue to be supplied,” he said.

Kraft said the pavement will be pulled up soon so the pipe can be fixed.
