School is back in full swing, and so is Eastern Michigan’s Office of Nutrition Services. Don’t wait for the turn of the new year to take charge of your health, get an early start on those nagging nutrition issues and take steps to resolve them now. EMU’s dietetic students and the managing registered dietitian, Heather Anderson, are available to assist students with nutrition related goals aimed at improving campus wide health.
The office, located at 108 Roosevelt Hall, is the campus hub for all your nutrition needs. Counseling and nutrient analysis services are available for those needing specific nutrition information related to diabetes, allergies, sports nutrition, eating disorders or weight management.
Also available are two methods of body composition testing: Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and Dual-energy X-ray Absorpiometry Scans. While both methods differentiate the distribution of body mass, the DEXA machine is capable of measuring bone mass density as well.
Educating the community by providing workshops and cooking demonstrations is a primary focus at ONS. Anderson encourages students to take advantage of these services while they are here on campus.
“This is a great time to equip yourselves with knowledge of how to shop, plan and prepare meals that will stay with you well after your college years,” Anderson said.
The ONS Facebook page offers information on cutting edge nutrition topics that are part of the buzz on the street. Let their information help you decipher what information is scientifically sound and what information is just another gimmick. A newly added feature this year is their Nutrition Tip of the Day video, featuring senior dietetic students.
Services are available to students at a discounted rate, but community, staff and faculty can take advantage of their services as well. Pricing information can be found online at www.emich.edu/hs/ons.html or by calling the office.
Office hours are Monday through Thursday 9a.m. to 3p.m.
Appointments can be made by calling the ONS at 734-487-6572.
