Voting ID rules

In order to vote at the polls, you must show picture ID or sign an affidavit attesting you are not in possession of identification.

Acceptable forms of ID:

Preferred:
MI state ID card
MI state driver’s license

Other:
Out of state ID or driver’s license
Fed. or state-issued ID
U.S. Passport
Military ID
Student ID (High School/University)
Tribal identification card

Quick Tip:

While not required, it is a good idea to bring a piece of mail or voter registration card to verify address. Before coming to the polls, confirm the address where you’d be registered and the location of your polling location.

Other Info:

  • In this case, the affidavit is a slip of paper that is legally binding and certifies you acknowledge you are without ID but eligible to vote.
  • If you have an ID but forget to bring it to the polls, you will be asked to sign an affidavit.
  • Your ballot cannot be challenged due to a lack of ID if you sign the affidavit.
  • If you vote absentee, these ID requirements do not apply.
  • If you refuse to sign the affidavit and do not have valid ID, you will be refused a ballot and referred to the City Clerk.
  • Even if you know the election officials, you will still be required to show ID.
