Heart Walk exceeds its monetary goal of $16,000

The 2013 Washtenaw County Heart Walk, held on Sunday, raised $20,303.20 for the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives free of stroke and cardiovascular disease, according to their web site.

While it fell short of its recruitment goal of 144 people, the 115 who did walk raised over $4,000 more than their stated goal of $16,000 to fight heart disease.

According to heartwalk.org, cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death for all Americans.

The site says someone dies from cardiovascular disease every 39 seconds.

The 300 Heart Walks, held across the nation, boasted over 1 million participants, including Eastern Michigan University’s president Sue Martin.

The American Heart Association says the funds raised will go toward ground-breaking research, spreading information to those who need it and putting research into the hands of physicians.

Anyone who is interested can still donate to the American Heart Association at heartwalk.kintera.org/washtenaw/emu.
