App provides tools for college students, families

With the new iOS7 update, new iPhone 5s and a new Galaxy all on the market right now, people can’t wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest. In addition to all of that, a new app might be just what you need to accompany your new phone or even the smartphone you already have.

A new app called imo is now available for download on Androids, iPhones and iPads for free. This app has different features to make communication for college students – or anyone – more convenient.

Dan Hlavenka, a student from Chicago, said he uses imo to coordinate group projects or events and “send things like pictures and voice messages to people I’m working with so they can get a better idea of what I’m talking about without having to type it all out.”

The app has chat groups that give you the ability to upload and comment on pictures. You can save these pictures into a group gallery and by connecting to imo on the web you can download them to your computer.

“Our app provides a lot of features that college students would find useful, with the most popular probably being group chat,” said Ralph Harik, the CEO of imo. “They’re a great way to gather friends, family or classmates together, and are helpful for cutting down on email.”

Another feature is video and voice calls and voice messages. You can make these calls for free to each other over 3G/4G and Wi-Fi as long as you and your friend are signed in. The voice messages can be used to make a conversation a little more personal.

The app also allows you to be logged in to more than one device at a time and it has the ability to send your notifications to the app that you are most active on.

“Since students are always on the go, students can sign into imo on the web, Android, iPhone or iPad and move from device to device without dropping conversations,” said Harik.

The people who have created imo have now also translated the Android app into 30 different languages and the iOS app should be getting translated soon so that users can have their settings and conversations in whatever language are most comfortable speaking to friends and family in.

Users are able to find broadcasts from people all over the world as well. Based off of your profile and what you engage with on your feed, imo will show you broadcasts that are relevant to you.

“I like being able to connect with awesome, random people all over the planet,” said imo user Zelly Jeffers.

Harik says that he loves being able to have a chat group with his family. “I often share photos of my daughter so that my family can enjoy her daily cuteness.”
