Putnam Residence Hall rapes still being investigated

Two separate incidences of rape were reported to Eastern Michigan University police on Sunday. Both reports are still undergoing investigation as first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

According to the EMU crime report, the first incident took place in Putnam Residence Hall early Friday. The female victim reported being raped by a male suspect.

“The suspect and the victim were known to each other,” said Lieutenant of Investigations Daniel Karrick.

Vice President for Media Relations Geoff Larcom says this suspect is in custody at the Washtenaw county jail.

Karrick stated he expects that the suspect will be charged tomorrow.

The second incident took place early Saturday morning when a male suspect forced sexual intercourse upon the female victim, also in Putnam Residence Hall. Karrick said the suspect was a visitor to the dorm from Ohio.

According to Larcom, the suspect is a relative of a student at EMU and has been identified. He added that the suspect has already returned to Ohio, and is being sought by police.

“The two incidents are unrelated,” Karrick said.

Karrick wants to remind students to call the police immediately after something has happened.

“Delay can hurt the investigation,” Karrick said.

Karrick also provided a few tips for EMU students.

“Be aware of your surroundings, walk with friends, and program the EMU police number [734 487 1222] in your phone,” Karrick said.
