Sinkhole closes East Circle Drive behind Quirk

Eastern Michigan University Physical Plant employees responded to a sinkhole approximately 4 feet in diameter that appeared on East Circle Drive behind the Quirk Dramatic Arts Building around 7:00 Tuesday night.

Physical Plant master tradesperson Doug Gotterson and equipment operator Jeff Roulo agreed that the sinkhole was likely the result of a collapsed storm drain, however the cause cannot be confirmed until they are able to dig up the area.

Gotterson said they will ask Miss Dig System, Inc. for a 24-hour emergency dig in order to get to the problem as soon as possible. He said the snow coming Tuesday night could slow the process, though.

“We’re supposed to get a foot of snow tonight,” Gotterson said. “We hope it can get taken care of by Friday.”

Until the sinkhole can be eradicated, East Circle Drive behind Quirk will be remain barricaded to thru traffic.
