Washtenaw house fire causes $125k in damages

The third floor of a house on the 600 block of Washtenaw caught fire Sunday afternoon, destroying the entire floor and devastating the residents.

According to MLive, fire fighters from the city of Ypsilanti, the city of Ann Arbor, Pittsfield Township, Superior Township and Ypsilanti Township responded to the fire at 611 Washtenaw Ave. Six people were home at the time of the fire, and all were evacuated safely before any fire personnel arrived on the scene.

“The whole third floor had heavy fire damage,” Lieutenant Mike Kouba told MLive. “The total approximate damage was $125,000.”

Fire personnel were on the scene, containing the fire, until about 6:20 p.m. according to MLive.
“We had the fire under control within 45 minutes, but there’s such a large amount of damage that it takes hours to sift through the rubble and make sure there’s no remaining fire we need to extinguish,” Kouba told MLive.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Kouba.

A next door neighbor reported Sunday that a third-floor resident woke up to a fire on his futon that morning.

Although the third floor saw the most damages, Kouba told MLive all residents of the house have been displaced.
