Must-see TV shows for the fall

Television is the one form of entertainment that has kept people communicating since its first premiere in the early 1900s. Whether or not you are an avid tweeter or blogger about the latest and greatest shows, or just like to curl up on the couch with a group of friends and watch the newest episode of a favorite show, there is always something to talk about.

This fall, students at Eastern Michigan University will have a lot to discuss as networks such as FOX, NBC and CBS reveal a lineup of television series that cater to the romantics, suspense junkies and everything in between.

On Monday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central, Fox premieres the series “Gotham.” Told from the viewpoint of Gotham Police Department’s Jim Gordon (played by Ben McKenzie), “Gotham” is Fox’s effort to get into the comic-book craze and a comic enthusiast’s dream series.

The series begins as an origin story of Gotham – meaning a pre-Batman Gotham – with Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) investigating the murder of a young Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazour) parents.

Gotham is not just about the fresh-faced Gordon’s rising career, but also promises to unravel the origin of several DC Comic villains including Catwoman, the Penguin, and the Riddler.

For viewers who love to be swept off their feet and into a romantic comedy “that chronicles a relationship from beginning to end a la 500 Days of Summer” (TVland), “A to Z” premieres on NBC on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. Eastern/8 p.m. Central.

Ben Feldman stars as Andrew, a secret romantic who makes his living working at an online dating company. Co-star Cristin Milioti plays Zelda, a no-nonsense lawyer. The two meet by accident when a glitch on Wallflower Online Dating site causes Zelda to have a dating match that goes terribly wrong and forces her to meet at Wallflower Online Dating Agency, which is where Andrew is employed.

“A to Z” which stands for “Andrew to Zelda” follows the two through a relationship that according to “A to Z” narrator Katey Sagal lasts “8 months, 3 weeks, 5 days and 1 hour.”

On Wednesday Oct. 1 at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central the suspense-filled series “Stalker” premieres on CBS.

Dylan McDermott from the series American Horror Stories stars as Jack Larsen, who works for a specialized division of the Los Angeles Police Department that deals with the stalking and possible murder of women.

The show has already received great encouragement from future fans on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtags #tca14 and #stalker.

Besides the gruesome moments already captured in the video sneak peeks, McDermott and co-star Maggie Q “hopes the show will raise awareness of stalking” (cbs.com).

In the realm of reality shows, “Utopia” will premiere on Fox, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central. In the experimental reality show, 15 contestants must live in a society for one full year relying solely on the ideas of one another to create rules and regulations.

The contestants must decide everything from the type of government they will create to any religious practices they will follow. Cameras will be filming these contestants all day every day so the viewers can sink their teeth into the real life events of “Utopia.”

“Rumors have it that the viewers will also be able to decide if the society truly is a Utopia.” (TV Guide)

These television shows are just among the few that are said to be a must watch this Fall 2014. Sit back, grab some popcorn and prepare for the ultimate television show watching experience with these new and upcoming series.
