James Smith to be named EMU's next president

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents will be gathering at 1 p.m. today in room 201 Welch Hall to vote in Dr. James M. Smith as EMU's 23rd President.

James Smith has a profile that fits what EMU was looking for in its presidential search. He has a strong educational background and is experienced in fund-raising.

Smith was formally the president of Northern State University, where he has been since July of 2009. According to Smith's bio on Northern State University's web site, before Northern State he previously was the vice president for economic development. Before that position he was the dean of BGSU Firelands, the only regional campus on Bowling Green.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Smith also previously was the dean of the School of Education at Indiana State University, and public administrator at Central and Southwestern Ohio.
