A 32-year-old man from Ypsilanti was arraigned on one felony account of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and is out on bail and is awaiting a probable cause hearing for Thursday, Dec. 16, the Washtenaw County 14A-1 District Court said.

Charles Michael Smith was arrested on charges of assaulting a 30-year-old man from Inkster in Ypsilanti Township on Oct. 4, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. The assault happened near the intersection of North Ford Blvd. and Forest Avenue.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crime, they found the Inkster man beaten with severe injuries, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office. He was taken to the hospital soon after he was found.

Smith was then arrested without incident after being located shortly after the assault took place, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office.

Smith was arraigned at the Washtenaw County 14A-1 District Court on Dec. 5. According to the case file released by the Washtenaw County 14A-1 District Court, Smith had his bond set at $10,000 cash or surety.

As of Friday, Dec. 10, Smith’s motives are unknown, and the cause of what led up to the attack is currently being investigated by Ypsilanti police, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith could face up to 10 years in prison if charged with the intent to do great bodily harm, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office.
