The Eastern Michigan University soccer team competed in their season-opening match against Western Illinois in Brighton, MI on Aug. 18. The Eagles and Leathernecks recorded a 2-2 draw.

EMU entered halftime leading the game 2-1 before WIU tied up the game in the second half.

Sophomore Vittoria Greco tallied the Eagles first goal of the season with only 1:31 off the clock. Greco also had the only assist for EMU.

WIU scored a goal seven minutes into the game, quickly evening the score 1-1.

Sophomore Maddie O’Farrell scored the second goal for the Eagles at the 15:19 mark in the first half.

The Leathernecks recorded another goal in the second half of the match with 4:32 off the clock, drawing the score 2-2. Both squads made several late scoring pushes but the game remained a stalemate, concluding in a 2-2 draw.

Freshman Lily Spotak, Hannah Thompson, and Mary Grimes all made their EMU debuts against the Leathernecks.

This is the first time EMU has had a result in the four-match series with WIU. In the past three contests, the Leathernecks won. The two goals scored by the Eagles are also the most in a match against WIU.

The Eagles next match will be against St. Bonaventure on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. in Olean, N.Y. You can watch the game on ESPN+.
