EMU volleyball team competes in Xavier tournament

Eagles efforts pushed the University of Virginia to five sets

The Eastern Michigan University’s women’s volleyball team qualified for the MAC tournament following a streak of four wins straight that started on senior weekend against Western Michigan and Northern Illinois.

On Sept. 2-3, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball squad completed several matches in the Xavier Tournament. The event was hosted in the Cintas Center on Xavier University's campus. The Eagles overall record is 0-6 after this past weekend.

The first game played was against Purdue Fort Wayne. EMU got swept 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 25-27). Freshman Sabrina Gremm collected 15 kills and 16 digs. Senior Samantha Basham registered eight kills to help. Freshman Emma McMahon contributed 16 digs and senior Raeven Chase completed five blocks.

The first match of the day was against Xavier, which resulted in a 3-1 loss for the Eagles (14-25, 14-25, 25-23, 21-25). Senior Krista Blakely finished with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .393 and grad student Callie Minshew completed 11 kills while hitting .350. McMahon had 17 digs as Gremm collected 15. Sophomore Mekayla Koger also had six blocks.

EMU put up a good fight against the University of Virginia, but still fell short 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 6-15). Gremm led the Eagles with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Minshew contributed nine kills for 20 kills total in her Eagles debut. Defense was strong with 18 digs from McMahon and six blocks from sophomore Madeline Timmerman.

This upcoming weekend EMU will travel to Chicago, IL to compete in the DePaul Tournament on Sept. 9-10. The Eagles will face Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT on Friday, and DePaul at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.
